Chapter 5 - The Corporate Strike

The news hit Claire like a physical impact. She leaned back in the chair, staring at the screen as if it were written in a foreign language.

"I... I can't take over a global corporation, Julian," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I was a barista three years ago. I worked at a bakery. I don't know anything about boardrooms or stock liquidations!"

I stood up, walked around the desk, and sat on the edge near her chair. "You don't have to run the company, Claire. You just have to hold the key long enough for us to stop Eleanor from destroying this family."

"Why did Evelyn do this?" Claire asked, tears brimming in her eyes again. "Did she know Eleanor would come after you?"

"Evelyn knew her mother better than anyone," I said quietly. "Evelyn knew that Eleanor’s love was conditional—it was based entirely on control, reputation, and wealth. When Evelyn got sick, Eleanor tried to force her to sign over the boys' legal guardianship to Vance Global so she could raise them as corporate heirs. Evelyn refused, and this clause was her insurance policy."

Claire looked down at her hands—hands that were still calloused from weeks of heavy labor. "Eleanor will fight this with everything she has. She will try to ruin my mother's memory. She'll call me a bastard, a gold-digger..."

"Let her try," I said softly, reaching out to lightly squeeze her wrist. "You aren't alone anymore, Claire. You have me. You have Arthur. And most importantly, you have two little boys who think you hung the stars."

Claire looked up at me, her hazel eyes meeting mine. For a long, quiet moment, something shifted in the atmosphere between us—a silent, unspoken understanding born from shared loss, deep devotion, and a fierce drive to protect Evelyn's legacy.

The next morning at 9:00 AM, the emergency meeting of the Whitmore Enterprises Board of Directors commenced in our glass tower downtown.

The boardroom on the fortieth floor was packed. Twelve senior board members sat around the long mahogany table, looking tense and anxious. At the far end sat Eleanor Vance, wearing a stark black suit, her expression triumphant as she reviewed a stack of legal documents with her chief legal officer.

When the double doors opened, I walked into the room.

Beside me walked Claire, looking striking and elegant in a tailored dark-green suit, her hair styled in soft waves. Behind us came Arthur Vance-Cross, carrying two thick leather binders.

Whispers immediately broke out across the room.

"What is the meaning of this, Julian?" one of the senior board members, Harold Finch, demanded. "We called this emergency session to address the public relations fallout regarding your family situation!"

"I am well aware of why this meeting was called, Harold," I said smoothly, taking my seat at the head of the table. Claire took the seat directly to my right.

Eleanor let out a cold, sharp laugh. "Bringing your illegitimate housekeeper to a corporate board meeting, Julian? Is this your idea of a defense? You are demonstrating the exact lack of judgment I cited in my petition to remove you as CEO!"

"Silence, Eleanor," Arthur Vance-Cross spoke up, his voice ringing with legal authority. He placed a certified court document directly in front of Harold Finch and the board secretary.

"What is this?" Finch asked, adjusting his glasses.

"That," Arthur stated clearly, "is an official notification of the execution of the Evelyn Vance-Whitmore Irrevocable Family Trust Clause 4B."

Eleanor’s smile faltered slightly. "What are you talking about? That trust is dormant until the twins turn twenty-five!"

"Not anymore," Arthur smiled, leaning over the table. "Clause 4B states explicitly that if Eleanor Vance initiates adverse legal action against Evelyn’s surviving children or legal spouse, all voting proxies held by Vance Global within Whitmore Enterprises are automatically revoked and transferred to Evelyn’s designated secondary beneficiary."

Eleanor stood up so fast her chair screeched loudly against the hardwood floor. "Evelyn had no secondary beneficiary!"

"She did," I said, looking Eleanor dead in the eye. "Her sister. Claire Bennett."

The boardroom exploded into chaos. Directors started shouting, lawyers scrambled through pages of legal code, and Eleanor turned a terrifying shade of purple.

"This is a forgery!" Eleanor screamed, pointing a shaking, manicured finger at Claire. "She is a nameless, penniless bastard! She has no right to Vance Global assets!"

Claire didn't flinch. She sat tall, her posture regal, looking directly at the woman who had spent twenty-eight years pretending she didn't exist.

"I may be illegitimate in your eyes, Eleanor," Claire said, her voice clear, calm, and utterly devoid of fear. "But in the eyes of my sister, and in the eyes of the law, I am a Vance. And as of five minutes ago, I hold fifty-one percent of the voting shares in Vance Global."

Claire reached into her folder, pulled out a signed document, and slid it across the table to Eleanor.

"And my very first action as majority shareholder," Claire added softly, "is to terminate your position as CEO of Vance Global Enterprises. Effective immediately."

Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest, staggering backward into her lawyer’s arms as the full weight of her total defeat crashed down upon her.
