Chapter 6 - Shadows of Retaliation

The downfall of Eleanor Vance was swift and devastating.

Within forty-eight hours of the board meeting, the news of her removal from Vance Global made national financial headlines. The story of how she had hidden her late husband’s second daughter, attempted to frame her son-in-law, and tried to strip her own grandchildren of their inheritance swept through high-society circles like wildfire. Her allies abandoned her, her board members turned against her, and the state attorney general opened an investigation into her corrupt dealings with Judge Sterling.

By Friday afternoon, the storm had settled into a quiet victory.

At the estate, life was taking on a rhythm we had never known before.

I was working from home three days a week, conducting corporate meetings from my library so I could be present for lunch with the boys. Claire had spent the week meeting with Arthur and a team of ethical financial advisors to restructure Vance Global, transforming it into a trust aimed at funding pediatric oncology research in memory of Evelyn.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the sun was shining brightly over the estate's sprawling back lawn.

I sat on a wooden bench near the rose garden, watching Claire teach Lucas and Owen how to plant young sunflower seeds in small ceramic pots. The boys were covered in dark garden soil, laughing uncontrollably as Claire pretended to plant a seed on Owen's nose.

"Daddy, look!" Owen shouted, running over to me with his soil-covered hands held wide. "I'm a mud monster!"

"I see that, buddy," I laughed, catching him by his waist and swinging him into the air despite the dirt rubbing onto my clean shirt. "A very dangerous mud monster."

Lucas ran up behind him, holding a small watering can. "Aunt Claire said these sunflowers will grow taller than you, Dad!"

"Taller than me?" I feigned dramatic shock. "Impossible. No plant is taller than me."

Claire walked over, wiping her forehead with the back of her forearm, leaving a charming streak of dirt across her cheek. Her hazel eyes were bright, filled with a peaceful joy I hadn't seen since the day she arrived.

"They really will," Claire smiled, leaning against the wooden armrest of the bench. "My mother used to grow giant sunflowers in Illinois. She said they always face the light, no matter how cloudy the morning is."

I looked at her—at the dirt on her cheek, the warmth in her smile, and the gentle way she looked at my sons.

"Thank you, Claire," I said softly, my tone serious.

She blinked, surprised. "For what?"

"For bringing the light back to this house," I replied. "For saving my boys... and for saving me from becoming a man I would have hated."

Claire looked down, a soft blush rising on her cheeks. "You saved yourself, Julian. You just needed to remember what really mattered."

Before we could say anything more, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw Marcus’s name on the caller ID.

"Marcus?" I answered.

"Boss," Marcus’s voice came through, tense and sharp. "We have a security breach at the perimeter gate. Eleanor’s disgraced former head of security, a guy named Vance-Sterling associate named Miller, just rammed a vehicle through the service entrance."

My blood ran cold. "Where are they?"

"They’re heading toward the stables on foot," Marcus yelled over the sound of wind. "They know the estate layout, Julian! They're armed!"

I stood up instantly, my heart hammering in my chest. "Claire, take the boys inside the house right now! Lock the panic room doors!"

Claire didn't ask questions. The moment she heard the urgency in my voice, she scooped up Owen, grabbed Lucas by the hand, and sprinted toward the back terrace.

"Daddy!" Lucas cried out, looking back in terror.

"Go with Aunt Claire!" I shouted, turning toward the rose garden path as the distant sound of a heavy engine revving tore through the peaceful afternoon air.

A black pickup truck burst through the wooden trellises at the edge of the estate garden, spraying dirt and shattered wood into the air. The truck skidded to a halt fifty yards from where I stood.

The driver's side door flew open, and a man in a dark jacket stepped out, holding a heavy iron crowbar. Behind him, stepping out from the passenger side, was Eleanor Vance.

Her hair was unkempt, her dark suit crumpled, her eyes wild and bloodshot with unhinged, desperate madness. She had lost her wealth, her status, her legacy, and her sanity all in one week—and now she had come for her final, bitter revenge.

"Where are they, Julian?" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking with manic fury. "Where are my grandchildren?!"
