Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

By 4:00 PM, Oakridge Manor was quiet. A professional cleaning team I had summoned was hard at work sweeping up the shattered porcelain and reordering the foyer furniture.

I sat in my private home office, reviewing a stream of emails from Marcus.

Suddenly, my private mobile phone buzzed. The caller ID displayed an unknown local New York number.

I tapped the screen and brought the phone to my ear. "Hello?"

"Eleanor?"

The voice on the other end was smooth, young, and dripping with forced, sugary confidence. It wasn't David. It was Chloe Vance—David’s executive assistant and mistress.

"Chloe," I said, leaning back in my leather executive chair. "I was wondering when you would find the courage to call me."

A light, condescending chuckle came through the speaker. "Look, Eleanor, I think we need to talk like two mature adults. David is currently in a state of absolute distress at a hotel near JFK, and frankly, what you're doing is completely unreasonable."

"Unreasonable?" I smiled slightly. "In what way?"

"You frozen his accounts! You called the police on his elderly parents!" Chloe raised her voice, dropping her sweet facade. "Do you have any idea how much damage you're doing to his professional reputation? We were supposed to be on a flight to Tokyo to finalize a major international partnership!"

"There was no partnership, Chloe," I said smoothly. "David lied to you. Just like he lied to his board of directors, his investors, and his wife."

"He didn't lie to me!" Chloe spat defensively. "He loves me! He’s been planning to leave your dreary, boring life for over a year! That diamond ring in his pocket was meant for me when we landed in Tokyo!"

"Is that right?" I asked, pulling up Chloe's public financial background on my computer screen—a report Marcus had sent me an hour ago. "Then I assume you also know that David listed you as the managing director of C&D Global Holdings in the Cayman Islands?"

There was a sudden, sharp pause on Chloe's end. "What... what does that have to do with anything?"

"It means, Chloe," I explained with clinical precision, "that when the federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission complete their audit of the $1.2 million in embezzled corporate funds sitting in that Cayman account, your signature is the one on every single wire transfer log."

Chloe’s breath hitched loudly over the line. "What?! No! David told me those were standard corporate tax exemption forms!"

"David used you as a financial fall guy," I said softly. "He put your name on the shell company so that if the fraud was ever discovered, he could claim his assistant acted independently while he was out of the country."

"You're lying!" Chloe shrieked, her voice cracking with pure panic. "David wouldn't do that to me!"

"Check your personal email, Chloe," I advised. "My attorney just served C&D Global Holdings with a formal subpoena for all corporate ledgers. If I were you, I would hire a very good criminal defense attorney before the FBI knocks on your hotel room door."

"Eleanor! Wait—!"

I ended the call, tossed the phone onto my desk, and smiled.

The seeds of doubt had been planted. In a relationship built entirely on deceit, greed, and vanity, paranoia is the deadliest poison. Within twenty-four hours, David and Chloe would tear each other apart trying to save their own skins.

My desk phone chimed. It was Marcus calling on the secure line.

"Eleanor," Marcus said, his voice laced with intense satisfaction. "We just got confirmation from the district court. The judge signed the emergency asset freeze order for all domestic accounts associated with David Hayes. Furthermore... the board of directors at Hayes Logistics has called an emergency session for 9:00 AM tomorrow."

"And David?" I asked.

"David has been summoned to appear before the board," Marcus chuckled. "And he has no idea that you now own forty-one percent of his company's voting shares."
