Chapter 9 - The Rebirth

Six months after the trial.

The golden afternoon sun was setting over the Manhattan skyline, casting a warm, brilliant glow across the sleek glass windows of the newly established Vance Heritage Capital headquarters in Midtown.

I stood in my new executive office on the top floor, looking out over the city.

Following the total liquidation of Hayes Logistics, Marcus and I had acquired the company’s remaining assets, restructured its operations, and rebranded it under my family's heritage trust. Every single innocent employee who had faced losing their job under David’s corrupt reign was rehired with better salaries and full benefits.

Under my leadership as Chief Executive Officer, Vance Heritage Capital had grown by thirty percent in its first two quarters, becoming one of the most respected, ethically managed investment firms in the city.

A soft knock sounded at my office door.

"Come in," I said softly, turning around.

My executive vice president—a brilliant, kind-hearted woman named Clara whom I had hired from Deloitte—stepped into the office carrying a leather folder.

"Eleanor," Clara smiled warmly. "The final divorce decree has just been signed by the state judge. You are officially, legally single. All financial ties to David Hayes have been permanently severed."

I took the legal document from her hand, looking down at the official red state seal stamped at the bottom.

ELEANOR VANCE VS. DAVID HAYES — DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE COMPLETE.

A profound, weightless sense of freedom washed over me, deeper and sweeter than anything I had ever felt in my life. The shadow that had hung over my life for eight years was completely gone.

"Thank you, Clara," I said, offering her a genuine smile. "And how are the foundation plans coming along?"

"Wonderful," Clara replied, opening her folder. "The Eleanor Vance Shelter for Financial Abuse Victims has officially secured its second location in Brooklyn. The grant funding from your trust will provide free legal representation and housing for over two hundred women this year."

"Perfect," I nodded. "Make sure the legal team is fully staffed by next month."

After Clara left, I walked over to the large floor-to-ceiling windows, taking a long sip of my sparkling water.

My phone chimed with a news notification:

FORMER EXECUTIVE DAVID HAYES TRANSFERRED TO MAXIMUM-SECURITY FEDERAL PENITENTIARY IN PENNSYLVANIA TO SERVE 18-YEAR SENTENCE.

I closed the notification without reading further. David was no longer a part of my story. He was merely a ghost sitting in a cold stone cell, paying for the ruin he had crafted with his own hands.
