Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Siege

At 8:45 AM the following morning, the glass-walled boardroom on the thirty-second floor of the Hayes Logistics headquarters in Midtown Manhattan was filled with tension thick enough to cut with a knife.
Sitting around the long marble table were seven senior board members—elderly, wealthy investors who had backed David’s father twenty years ago and continued to support David under the assumption that he was a respectable corporate leader.
At the head of the table sat David Hayes.
He looked terrible. His navy suit was wrinkled, his hair was unkempt, and deep dark circles hung beneath his bloodshot eyes. He had spent the entire night in a cheap airport motel, unable to pay for a proper hotel room because all his cards were frozen. Beside him sat his corporate defense lawyer, a nervous-looking man who kept sweating through his collar.
"This is an absolute outrage!" David slammed his hand onto the table, trying to muster his former authority. "My personal bank accounts were maliciously frozen due to a domestic dispute with my bitter soon-to-be ex-wife! This has nothing to do with Hayes Logistics!"
The chairman of the board, an elderly man named Howard Vance (no relation to my family, but a long-time associate of my late father), looked at David over his half-moon reading glasses with utter coldness.
"Is that so, David?" Howard asked calmly. "Then perhaps you can explain why our corporate auditors received a formal notice from the State Attorney General’s office this morning regarding $1.2 million in unrecorded wire transfers to a shell company in the Cayman Islands?"
David’s face drained of color. "That... that was an offshore logistics expansion project! It was completely within my executive discretionary authority!"
"Without board approval?" Howard countered sharply. "Without financial documentation?"
The heavy wooden doors of the boardroom swung open.
Every head turned.
I walked into the boardroom, flanked by Marcus Vance and two senior forensic auditors from Deloitte. I was wearing a tailored charcoal-gray power suit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless bun, carrying a leather briefcase.
David sprang out of his chair as if he had been shocked with high voltage. "Eleanor?! What the hell are you doing here?! Security! Escort this woman out!"
"Sit down, David," Howard Vance barked, his voice echoing through the room. "Mrs. Hayes is here at my personal invitation as a principal shareholder."
"Principal shareholder?!" David shouted, pointing a trembling finger at me. "She doesn't own a single share of this company!"
Marcus Vance stepped forward, unzipping his briefcase and sliding a thick blue binder in front of every board member.
"Gentlemen," Marcus announced loudly. "Six months ago, when David Hayes sought a $3 million liquidity expansion loan from Midtown Private Bank, he put up his personal equity shares as collateral. What he failed to mention to the board was that the primary guarantor of that loan was the Vance Family Heritage Trust—managed exclusively by Eleanor Hayes."
David froze, his eyes wide with absolute terror. "No... no, that’s impossible..."
"Because David defaulted on his personal loan obligations yesterday due to his account freeze," Marcus continued smoothly, "the trust exercised its contractual right to step into the security position. As of 8:00 AM today, Eleanor Hayes holds forty-one percent of the voting shares in Hayes Logistics."
I took my seat at the far end of the marble table, directly opposite David. I rested my hands on the cool surface, looking at my husband with a calm, predatory smile.
"Good morning, David," I said softly.
"You... you set me up..." David whispered, his knees buckling slightly as he sank back into his chair.
"You set yourself up, David," I replied. "You thought you were the smartest man in the room. You thought you could lie to your wife, rob your company, betray your investors, and abandon your family without facing a single consequence."
Howard Vance cleared his throat, picking up his gavel. "In light of the evidence of gross financial misconduct, embezzlement, and breach of corporate duty, I move for an immediate board vote to terminate David Hayes as Chief Executive Officer of Hayes Logistics, effective immediately, with cause."
"Seconded," another board member called out instantly.
"All in favor?" Howard asked.
Every single board member raised their hand.
I raised my hand last, holding David’s gaze the entire time.
"Motion carried unanimously," Howard declared, striking the gavel onto the wooden block. "David Hayes, you are stripped of all executive authority. Security will escort you from the building immediately. All corporate assets, vehicles, and devices are to be surrendered at once."
Two tall security guards stepped into the boardroom, grabbing David by his shoulders and hauling him out of his chair.

"Eleanor! Please!" David screamed, his voice echoing down the hallway as he was dragged away in disgrace. "Eleanor! Don't do this! We can talk! I love you!"
I didn't answer. I simply opened my folder and began reviewing the company's new operational budget.
