Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

For twelve endless hours, the second floor of the DeLuca mansion was transformed into a surgical wing.

Dr. Vance and two trusted surgical nurses worked frantically behind closed doors to extract the 38-caliber bullet from Enzo’s lower chest. The bullet had missed his vital organs by less than an inch, but it had nicked an artery, causing severe internal bleeding.

Harper refused to leave the hallway.

She sat on the cold floor outside the room, wrapped in Enzo’s bloody overcoat, her knees pulled up to her chest. Her hands were still stained with his blood; she had refused to wash them, as if washing his blood away meant letting go of his life.

Marco walked up the stairs, carrying two paper cups of hot coffee. He sat down on the floor beside her, handing her one.

"He's tough, Harper," Marco said softly, his voice heavy with fatigue. "I've seen Enzo take a blade to the shoulder and keep fighting. He won't let a bullet from a pathetic bastard like your father take him down."

Harper looked at the coffee cup, her eyes hollow. "He saved my life, Marco. Preston was aiming for my heart. Enzo threw himself in front of me without even thinking."

"Of course he did," Marco said simply.

Harper looked at him, bewildered. "What do you mean 'of course'? He barely knows me! He married me to get revenge on my family!"

Marco let out a soft sigh, staring at the wall across the hall. "Enzo took you into this house for revenge, yeah. That was the plan. But the moment he saw what your father did to you... the moment he saw those scars... everything changed for him."

Marco turned to look at her directly. "Enzo lost his brother, Harper. He spent six months consumed by hatred and black rage. But when he brought you here, he realized there was someone in this city who was suffering even more than he was. You didn't just become his responsibility; you became his light. He’d burn down the whole world to keep you safe."

Harper choked back a sob, pressing her face into her hands. The tears she had held back for years—for her mother, for herself, for the pain and isolation—came pouring out in a torrential flood.

At dawn, the doors to the room finally opened.

Dr. Vance stepped out, pulling off her surgical mask. She looked exhausted, but when she saw Harper sitting on the floor, a soft, reassuring smile touched her lips.

"He's stable," Dr. Vance said quietly. "The bullet is out, the artery is repaired, and the bleeding is stopped. He's very weak, but he's going to live."

Harper let out a ragged breath, dropping her head back against the wall as a profound wave of relief washed over her.

"He's waking up," Dr. Vance added, stepping aside. "And the first word out of his mouth was your name. Go on in."

Harper didn't hesitate. She scrambled up from the floor and rushed into the room.

The room smelled of antiseptic and ozone. Enzo was lying on the bed, his torso wrapped in white medical bandages, an IV line dripping fluid into his arm. His dark hair was messy, his face pale, but when he heard her footsteps, his dark eyes slowly opened and locked onto hers.

"Harper..." his voice was a barely audible whisper.

She hurried to his bedside, sinking into the chair, taking his uninjured hand in both of hers. "I'm here," she sobbed, lifting his hand to her lips and kissing his knuckles. "I'm right here."

Enzo squeezed her fingers weakly. "Did we... get the drives?"

"We got everything," she said, wiping her tears with her sleeve. "Marco turned them over to the federal prosecutor an hour ago. Preston is dead, Enzo. The Whitcomb empire is finished. It's over. You got your justice."

Enzo stared at her quietly for a long moment, his dark gaze searching her face.

"And you?" he whispered. "Did you get yours?"

Harper froze, looking at the man who had nearly died to protect her honor and her life.

"Yes," she whispered, a soft, genuine smile breaking across her face for the first time in years. "I got mine."
