Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

Two weeks passed.
Spring began to show its first tender signs across Chicago. The thick ice on Lake Michigan began to crack, and the heavy snow on the DeLuca estate melted away, revealing green grass beneath.
Enzo’s recovery was rapid, fueled by sheer willpower and the constant, gentle presence of Harper.
She had moved her things into his suite—not because he forced her, but because neither of them could sleep when they were apart. She took care of his bandages, read to him in the afternoons, and slowly, step by step, the heavy darkness that had hung over the estate began to lift.
However, peace in the mafia world is rarely cheap.
With Preston Whitcomb dead and his financial holdings seized by the federal government, a massive power vacuum had opened in Chicago's business and underworld sectors. Other families—families who had once feared the combined strength of Whitcomb money and DeLuca muscle—began to sense weakness.
On a warm Tuesday afternoon, Enzo was sitting at his grand desk in his office, wearing a dark suit again, though he moved a bit slower due to his healing ribs.
Marco stepped into the room, looking grave.
"Boss, we have a problem," Marco said. "The Moretti family is making a move. Dominic Moretti called an emergency meeting of the Five Families tonight at the Italian Cultural Center. He's claiming that your marriage to Harper was invalid because Preston was a federal informant, and he's demanding the DeLuca family surrender the North Shore territory."
Enzo’s eyes flared with dangerous heat. "Dominic thinks because I took a bullet, I've gone soft."
"He's rallying the older bosses," Marco warned. "He's telling them you let a woman weaken your resolve, that you destroyed Whitcomb instead of absorbing his assets."
"He wants a war," Enzo said, leaning back in his chair, his jaw set hard.
"Then we give him one," a clear, strong voice interrupted from the doorway.
Enzo and Marco turned. Harper was standing there, dressed in a sleek, elegant navy-blue tailored skirt suit. Her blond hair was styled in soft, sophisticated waves, and her posture was straight, regal, and entirely devoid of fear.
"Harper," Enzo said, his tone softening. "This doesn't concern you."
"It concerns my family," she corrected smoothly, walking into the room with confidence. "Dominic Moretti thinks you married a helpless heiress who ruined your leverage. He thinks I'm a liability."
She walked up to Enzo’s desk, leaning her hands on the polished wood. "Take me to the meeting tonight."
Enzo frowned. "The Commission meeting is no place for a civilian, Harper. It's a den of wolves."
"I spent my entire life surrounded by wolves, Enzo," Harper replied, her blue-gray eyes flashing with brilliant intellect. "I know how the Morettis operate. Dominic’s father owed my father twelve million dollars in illegal gambling debts from 2022. I know where the receipts are stored in my grandfather's trust archives. If Moretti wants to challenge the DeLuca family, I will personally strip his empire down to the dirt before dessert is served."
Enzo stared at her, a mixture of profound shock and immense pride swelling in his chest. The broken girl who had cowered behind his bedpost had transformed into a formidable Don's wife—a queen ready to protect her king.
Enzo stood up, walking around the desk. He reached out, wrapping his hand around the back of her neck, pulling her forehead gently against his.
"You are incredible," he whispered softly.

"I learned from the best," she murmured back.
Enzo looked at Marco. "Tell the men to prep the armored fleet. My wife and I have a dinner to attend."
