Chapter 1 - Inside the Black Citadel

The rain-slicked streets of Manhattan blurred past the tinted bulletproof windows of the convoy as it cut through the night toward a destination Hannah Mercer could only guess at.

Inside the cavernous leather interior of the lead SUV, the air smelled faintly of expensive cologne, cedar, and the clean scent of laundry detergent belonging to the nanny, an elderly woman named Martha who looked both terrified and deeply protective.

Lily, Grace, and Emma had finally quieted down, exhausted by the emotional turbulence of the restaurant and the sudden shift in their environment. Lily was curled up in the corner of Martha’s lap, while Grace and Emma slept side by side in a specialized travel cradle.

Hannah sat on the opposite bench, pressed as far against the door as physics allowed, her bruised wrist throbbing slightly where Dominic Vale had caught her.

Dominic sat across from her. He hadn’t spoken a single word since they left the alley behind Bellafonte. His large frame filled the space, the harsh amber streetlights cutting through the window glass and illuminating the sharp angles of his face, the faint white scar over his eyebrow, and the dark ink crawling up his collar.

"Where are you taking me?" Hannah finally broke the silence, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound brave.

Dominic didn't look at her immediately. He stared down at his heavy signet ring, twisting it slowly around his finger.

"Home," he said quietly.

"That's not an answer. That's a location you chose. I have an apartment in Queens. I have a night shift at the insurance firm starting at midnight. I have bills to pay."

Dominic raised his eyes. They were a dark, stormy grey—cold enough to freeze water, yet burning with an intensity that made it difficult to look away.

"Your bills are paid, Miss Mercer," he said evenly. "As for your job, consider yourself on an indefinite, fully paid leave of absence. As for your apartment..." He paused, leaning forward slightly. "You won't be returning there tonight."

Hannah’s heart hammered against her ribs. "You can't just abduct people! This is kidnapping! The police—"

"The police in this city are well aware of who I am," Dominic interrupted, his tone completely devoid of arrogance, stating it merely as an unshakeable law of nature. "And none of them are going to raid my home because the most feared man in the tri-state area has brought home the only three human beings on earth who managed to make his mute daughters speak."

"I told you, I don't know why they said that!" Hannah hissed, tears of frustration stinging her eyes. "I’ve never seen them before today! I work twelve hours a day just to keep my head above water! I don't have time to be part of whatever mafia mind games you're playing!"

Dominic’s expression hardened, though a strange flicker of something unreadable crossed his features at her mention of working twelve-hour days.

"Do you think I enjoy this, Hannah?" he asked, using her first name for the first time. It felt entirely too intimate, like a key turning in a lock. "For twenty-four months, I have paid the finest specialists in Europe and America to look into my daughters' mouths, into their brains, into their souls. They haven't whispered a single syllable. Not dada. Not no. Not a cry that formed a word. And then a exhausted waitress drops a tray in a crowded restaurant, and all three of them call her Mama."

He leaned back, his broad shoulders pressing against the leather.

"You expect me to simply put you in a cab and pretend that didn't happen?"

Before Hannah could formulate a reply, the SUV slowed down, turning sharply through a pair of towering wrought-iron gates guarded by armed men in black coats. The gates slid shut behind them with a heavy, final thud.

The vehicle rolled up a sweeping cobblestone driveway toward a sprawling, gothic-revival stone mansion nestled deep within the private woodlands of Westchester County—an imposing fortress of wealth, isolation, and shadows.

The black citadel of the Vale family.
