Chapter 6 - The Locked Vault

The second-floor hallway of the east wing was normally off-limits to everyone except Dominic and his closest security detail.
When Dominic and Hannah reached the end of the corridor, they found Lily, Grace, and Emma sitting in a neat little row on the plush Persian carpet directly in front of a massive, reinforced steel door that looked like it belonged to a Swiss bank vault rather than a residential bedroom.
The three little girls weren't crying. They were patting the cold steel with their tiny palms, chanting in sweet, musical unison:
"Mama... Mama... open..."
Hannah’s breath caught in her throat. She slowly approached them, kneeling down on the carpet beside Lily. The moment she was within reach, Lily turned, threw her arms around Hannah’s neck, and buried her face in her shoulder.
"Mama," Lily whispered softly.
Hannah’s eyes burned with fresh tears as she held the little girl tight. She looked up at Dominic, who was standing frozen before the massive steel door, his face completely drained of color.
"What is behind this door, Dominic?" Hannah asked, her voice trembling.
Dominic slowly reached into his suit pocket, pulling out a heavy brass key attached to a black leather cord that he wore around his neck—a key he hadn't used in years.
"My father's private sanctum," Dominic whispered, his voice shaking. "He kept all his classified ledgers, personal journals, and family archives here. No one has opened it since the day he died."
He inserted the key into the intricate double-lock mechanism.
Clack. Click.
The heavy steel bolts slid back with a resounding metallic echo that reverberated through the silent mansion. Dominic pulled the door open, releasing a cloud of dust and the scent of old paper, aged leather, and lavender.
Inside, the room was vast, lined with mahogany bookshelves and filing cabinets. But in the center of the room sat an old wooden desk illuminated by a shaft of afternoon sunlight cutting through a high, barred window.
On top of the desk sat a single, unsealed envelope addressed in elegant handwriting: For Dominic, when the truth finally knocks.
Dominic walked slowly across the room, his boots clicking against the hardwood floor. He picked up the envelope, his hands trembling as he pulled out a thick stack of documents and a pristine, modern flash drive.
He unfolded the primary letter and began to read aloud, his voice cracking with every word:
"My dear son, If you are reading this, it means the girls have found her. You spent twenty years believing Clara Mercer was a fabricated ghost. She wasn't. Clara Mercer was the alias I gave to your sister Elena to protect her from the rivals who wanted to destroy our bloodline. And the young woman holding my granddaughters right now... is not an outsider. She is your sister’s daughter. Your niece. And the rightful heir to everything we built."
The silence in the vault was absolute.
Hannah stared at Dominic, the words echoing in her mind like thunder.
May you like
Niece.
She wasn't a stranger. She was family.
