Chapter 8 - Unraveling the Web

Back in the mansion’s library, the digital files from the flash drive were projected onto a massive screen by Marcus, while Dominic and Hannah sat side by side at the mahogany table.

The triplets were fast asleep on a large velvet sofa in the corner, exhausted from the emotional afternoon, their tiny chests rising and falling in perfect synchronization.

"Your father’s journals explain everything," Marcus said, scrolling through digitized pages of handwritten notes. "When Elena fled twenty-seven years ago to escape an arranged marriage with the Sterling family, your father helped her hide. He set her up under the protection of a loyal doctor in Boston—Clara Mercer. When Elena passed away during childbirth, your father arranged for you to be raised by a trusted operative who posed as your father, keeping you safe in Queens while we searched for you in all the wrong places."

Hannah stared at the screen, watching old video clips of her mother—Elena—holding a baby blanket that matched the ones the triplets now used.

"So my dad... the man who raised me... wasn't my biological father?" Hannah whispered, a deep ache settling in her chest.

"He loved you as his own," Dominic said gently, reaching across the table to cover her hand with his large, warm palm. "He kept you safe when the world was trying to swallow you whole. That makes him more of a father than any bloodline ever could."

Hannah turned her hand over, intertwining her fingers with Dominic’s. The initial terror of being abducted had completely dissolved, replaced by a profound, magnetic gravity drawing them together.

"Why did they call me Mama?" Hannah asked, her voice barely a breath. "I'm their cousin."

"Children don't understand genealogy, Hannah," Dominic smiled softly, his grey eyes softening with warmth. "In their innocent minds, you carry the same scent, the same heartbeat, the same soul as their mother. To them, you are her return."

Suddenly, the library’s internal security monitor flickered.

A red warning light blinked silently in the corner of the screen.

Marcus froze, his fingers flying across his laptop keyboard. "Sir... we have an incoming anomaly."

Dominic’s relaxed posture vanished in a microsecond. The mafia boss reemerged, razor-sharp and deadly. "Talk to me, Marcus."

"External perimeter sensors just tripped at Gate Four," Marcus reported, his voice tight with alarm. "Thermal imaging shows a multi-vehicle convoy approaching up the private access road. They bypassed our primary electronic scramblers. These aren't local cops. These are professionals."

Dominic stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the Persian rug.

"Viktor Sterling," Dominic growled, his face twisting into a mask of pure fury. "He tracked the data ping when we accessed the vault."

Hannah stood up, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Dominic... the girls!"

"Marcus, secure the safe room in the basement," Dominic barked, drawing a heavy black firearm from his shoulder holster and checking the magazine with practiced, lethal efficiency. "Get Martha and the girls down the reinforced elevator immediately."

"And you?" Marcus asked.

"I’m going to remind Viktor why my family's name is whispered with respect in this city."
