Chapter 6 - The Cornered Rats

By New Year's Eve, the Mercer family was completely ruined. Ryan was officially fired from Mercer Financial, and the state board had initiated proceedings to revoke his financial licenses permanently.

Desperate, furious, and completely unhinged, Ryan broke his restraining order.

It was 11:00 PM when the alarm on my perimeter fence went off. I sat in my study, watching the security cameras. A cheap rental car had parked down the road, and Ryan was sprinting across my snow-covered lawn, holding a heavy iron tire iron.

He reached the front porch, slamming the metal tool against the heavy oak door. "Marcus! Open the door you old bastard! You ruined my life! Give me my daughter! Give me my money!"

I didn't call the police immediately. I walked down the hall, opened the door, and stood on the porch, looking down at him. The storm from Christmas Eve was gone, leaving only a cold, crisp night.

Ryan looked feral, his clothes stained, his eyes wide with frantic rage. "You think you're God because you have money? I'm going to take everything from you, Marcus! I'll tell the courts you threatened me!"

"You came to my house armed, Ryan. In this state, that's called aggravated felony trespass," I said calmly, stepping out onto the porch.

From the shadows of the driveway, four tactical police officers stepped forward, their red laser sights painting Ryan's chest. Detective Harris, an old friend of mine, walked up behind him, a pair of heavy steel handcuffs ready.

"Drop the iron, son," Harris said. "You're done."

Ryan dropped the tool, his knees buckled into the snow, and he wept like a child as he was dragged away into the dark.
