“Dad… please open the door.” On Christmas Eve, I found my daughter trembling on my porch, clutching her soaked, three-day-old baby against her chest. “He brought his mistress home,” she whispered. “His mother packed our things, threw us into the snow, and locked the door.” I looked at my tiny granddaughter shivering in the cold, then tightened my grip around my keys. “They chose the wrong family to destroy.”

Two months later, the civil court custody hearing was held in a private conference room downtown. Ryan sat across the table in an orange jumpsuit, flanked by a public defender. Margaret sat next to him, her expensive jewelry gone, her face looking ten years older.

Arthur Sterling placed a tablet on the center of the glass table.

"We are prepared to offer a plea agreement regarding the corporate espionage and the domestic abuse charges," Arthur stated coldly. "Mr. Mercer will sign a full termination of parental rights regarding Lily Vance. He will waive any claim to any asset owned by the Vance family or its subsidiaries."

"Never!" Margaret shouted, her voice cracking. "We have rights! Emily is a thief! She stole my son's future!"

"Mrs. Mercer," Arthur interrupted, sliding a secondary document across the table. "This is a warrant for your arrest, issued ten minutes ago by the District Attorney for wire fraud and conspiracy to commit corporate theft. If you do not convince your son to sign these termination papers right now, the prosecutor will ask for the maximum sentence of twenty-five years for both of you."

Ryan looked at his mother, then at the papers, and finally at me. I sat at the end of the table, silent, immovable, a mountain they had tried to move and broken themselves against.
