Chapter 5 - The Silent Partner

Valerie’s heart slammed into her throat. She stepped back instinctively, her hands raised slightly in a non-threatening gesture. "Eleanor... I’m sorry. I didn't mean to trespass."
Eleanor Mercer looked hollow. Her face was thin, with dark circles under her eyes that no amount of makeup could hide. She didn't look angry; she looked utterly exhausted, broken down by years of living under a shadow.
"He knows you called CPS," Eleanor said, her voice barely louder than the rustling leaves around them. "He’s already talking to his friends on the school board about terminating your teaching contract for gross misconduct and harassment."
"I don't care about my contract, Eleanor!" Valerie urged, stepping closer, her voice filled with desperate sincerity. "I care about Lila! She fainted in my arms on Thursday. She told me her father said it wouldn't hurt. Please, as her mother... tell me what is happening to her!"
Tears welled in Eleanor’s eyes, reflecting the dim moonlight, but she shook her head rapidly, clutching her coat tighter around her chest. "You don't understand who Marcus is. You think he's just an arrogant lawyer. You have no idea what he's involved in, or what he's capable of doing to protect himself."
"Then tell me!" Valerie pleaded softly. "Help me protect her! You know something is wrong, Eleanor. I can see it in your eyes. You're terrified of him, too."
Eleanor looked back toward the house, where the back door opened, casting a wide beam of light across the lawn. Marcus’s voice called out into the cool night air: "Eleanor? Are you out there?"
Eleanor shuddered, a visible panic seizing her entire body. She grabbed Valerie’s forearm with surprising strength, leaning in close.
"He isn't physically beating her, Valerie," Eleanor whispered rapidly, her words rushing out in a desperate flood. "It’s worse. He’s using her. He’s using her body for an illegal clinical trial. The barn... the equipment in the barn... he’s testing an unauthorized experimental gene-therapy drug he developed through his offshore medical shell company. He thinks it’s going to make him billions."
Valerie stared at her in total shock. "What?!"
"Lila has a rare auto-immune condition," Eleanor sobbed quietly. "Instead of treating her through legal channels, Marcus saw her as a test subject. He’s been administering injections to her in that barn every weekend. The pain... the low blood pressure... it’s severe side effects from the unregistered compound!"
"Eleanor! Where are you?" Marcus’s voice boomed closer from the edge of the yard.
Eleanor let go of Valerie’s arm and stepped back into the shadows. "Get away from here, Valerie," she whispered terrified. "If he finds out I told you, he will make us both disappear."

She turned and ran back toward the lit lawn, calling out to her husband that she was just checking the mailbox.
Valerie stood frozen in the dark woods, the horrific reality of the situation washing over her in terrifying waves. It wasn't simple domestic abuse; it was illegal medical experimentation on a helpless child, shielded by wealth, legal power, and family secrets.
