Chapter 8 - The Tarmac Standoff

The Allegheny Regional Airport was a small facility primarily serving private jets and corporate turboprops. At 5:15 a.m., thick ground fog blanketed the tarmac, illuminated only by the tall, yellow floodlights surrounding the perimeter fence.

Valerie pulled her car up to the exterior gate near the private flight terminal. A sleek, twin-engine Gulfstream jet sat parked on the concrete apron, its engines humming softly as flight crews performed pre-flight checks.

Near the boarding stairs stood a luxury black SUV.

Valerie’s heart stopped. Marcus was already there.

She saw him standing near the open door of the vehicle, speaking sharply to Eleanor, who was clutching a small pink suitcase. Marcus was holding Lila in his arms, wrapping a heavy blanket around the girl’s small shoulders. Lila looked completely limp, her head resting weakly against her father’s shoulder.

Valerie couldn't wait for Frank. Every second counted; if they stepped onto those stairs, the aircraft doors would seal, and local law enforcement would lose jurisdiction once the plane was cleared for takeoff.

Valerie threw her car door open, slammed it shut, and ran straight through the open pedestrian side-gate toward the tarmac.

"Marcus!" her voice screamed across the foggy expanse, echoing off the steel hangars.

Marcus turned abruptly, his eyes narrowing in furious disbelief as he saw Valerie running toward them across the concrete. "What are you doing here?!" he bellowed, stepping in front of the SUV and shifting Lila behind his arm. "Security! Get this woman off the airfield!"

Two private airfield security guards began moving toward Valerie, but she didn't stop.

"Don't put her on that plane, Eleanor!" Valerie yelled directly at the terrified mother. "I know about Aegis Therapeutics! I know about the compound in the barn! I know what he's been injecting into her!"

Marcus’s composure broke completely. His face contorted into a mask of pure rage. "You insane, miserable busybody," he snarled, handing the semi-conscious Lila to Eleanor. "You’ve ruined your career, Valerie. You're going to prison for this!"

He stepped toward Valerie, his hands clenching into fists, but before he could reach her, the sudden blare of sirens cut through the morning fog.

Three state police cruisers and Frank Miller’s unmarked detective vehicle sped through the main gates, their red and blue lights flashing violently across the damp tarmac. The vehicles screeched to a halt, boxing in the private jet and Marcus’s SUV.

State troopers jumped out with weapons drawn, commanding everyone to hold their positions.

Frank Miller strode forward, holding a legal document in his hand. "Marcus Mercer!" Frank shouted over the sound of the jet engines. "By order of the County Family Court, we are executing an emergency protective custody hold for Lila Mercer based on credible evidence of severe medical endangerment!"
