Chapter 9 - The Breakdown of Darkness

"This is an outrage!" Marcus yelled, his legal training kicking in as he tried to exert control over the situation. "I am a member of the bar! I am a member of the school board! This warrant is completely illegal! My daughter is undergoing medical transport for an acute illness under the care of a licensed physician!"
"Your licensed physician is Dr. Arthur Harrison," Frank said coldly, stepping up into Marcus's face. "State police just raided his clinic thirty minutes ago, Marcus. They seized his clinical logs, his unregistered freezer units, and three years of email correspondence between him and your Panama shell company."
Marcus froze. All the color drained from his face, leaving him looking hollow and defeated under the bright yellow floodlights. The elaborate web of lies he had spun for years suddenly collapsed around him in an instant.
Behind him, Eleanor let out a loud, shuddering sob. She collapsed onto her knees on the tarmac, holding Lila close to her chest.
"I'm sorry, Lila," Eleanor wept uncontrollably, kissing her daughter’s forehead over and over again. "I'm so sorry I didn't stop him sooner... I'm so sorry..."
A team of emergency paramedics, dispatched along with the state police, rushed forward with a gurney. Valerie stepped alongside them as they gently lifted Lila from her mother's arms.
Lila opened her eyes slowly. The fog, the flashing police lights, and the noise of the sirens flickered around her, but when her eyes landed on Valerie’s face, the fear in her expression finally began to melt away.
"Ms. Kincaid..." Lila whispered weakly, her small hand reaching out from beneath the blanket.

Valerie caught her tiny hand, holding it tight between her palms. "I'm right here, Lila. You're safe now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I promise."
Two state troopers stepped behind Marcus Mercer, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. As he was led away toward the back of a police cruiser, he looked back at Valerie and his daughter, but for the first time, his gaze held no power—only the bitter realization that his empire of control was gone forever.
