Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Web

In the damp sub-basement of the pier, Victor was bound to a heavy wooden chair under a single bare lightbulb. Dante sat across from him on a wooden crate, tossing a silver flip-lighter back and forth between his hands.

"You think you won?" Victor spat, blood dripping from his lip where Nico had struck him. "You think this ends with me?"

Dante opened the lighter. The small yellow flame flickered between them. "Who else was involved, Victor? You didn't have the connections to hide a family in Maine and monitor police feeds for seven years on your own."

Victor laughed, a bitter, rasping sound. "Don Corvo. He helped me set up the crash. He wanted the North End territory, and I wanted your shipping lines. We made a deal. You think Corvo was waiting for you at that dinner to sign a peace treaty? He was waiting to put a bullet in your head the moment I stripped your title!"

Dante closed the lighter with a sharp snap. "Thank you, Uncle."

"Dante! Wait!" Victor panicked as Dante stood up and walked toward the stairs. "We're blood! I raised you after your father died!"

"You raised me to be lethal," Dante said without looking back. "You should have remembered that before you touched my family."

Dante stepped out onto the upper deck where Elena was waiting in an armored SUV, having refused to stay at the safehouse while Dante handled the Commission. She stepped out into the rain, holding a heavy wool coat over her shoulders.

"Is it over?" she asked, her green eyes searching his face.

"Victor is finished," Dante said, pulling her into his arms to shield her from the cold spray. "But Corvo was in on it. He won't stop until he tries to finish what he started seven years ago."

"Dante, please," Elena sobbed against his chest. "We have enough money. We can leave Boston. We can go anywhere in the world—Italy, Switzerland, anywhere! Just leave the war behind!"

Dante held her face in his hands, wiping away a tear mixed with raindrops. "If I run now, Elena, we will spend the rest of our lives looking over our shoulders. Clara, Mia, and Lily will grow up in hiding just like you did. I’m going to end the Corvo family tonight. And tomorrow, we build our home."
