Chapter 7 - The Cornered Rats

With no other options, Ryan and Linda were forced to move into a cheap, run-down motel on the outskirts of the city, near the highway. The air smelled of stale grease and industrial disinfectant, and the neon sign outside buzzed incessantly through the night, casting a sickly pink glow over their peeling wallpaper.
Linda sat on the creaking bed, her face twisted in a permanent scowl of bitter hatred. "We have to sue her, Ryan! We have to get our share of that townhouse! You’re her husband! You have a right to her assets!"
"I talked to a legal aid lawyer, Mom," Ryan said, his voice hollow. "He looked at the pre-marital contract I signed. Everything she bought before the marriage is protected. The stock options are protected. And since I haven't contributed to the mortgage in three years, the judge will likely award her sole ownership of the townhouse. The only thing we have a right to is our own debt."
"I don't care about the contracts!" Linda shrieked, throwing a plastic cup at the wall. "She humiliated us! She put us in this... this hovel! We need to find something we can use against her. What about her job? What about her reputation?"
Ryan’s eyes narrowed. "Her job..."
"Yes!" Linda leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with a malicious light. "She’s the Commercial Director of Vanguard Development. They’re a conservative, high-society firm. If they found out she was... unstable, that she had a breakdown, that she’s physically assaulting her family—"
"I have the video," Ryan said slowly, a dark realization dawning on him. "I have the security footage from the night she shaved her own head. If I edit it... if I make it look like she had a psychotic episode and attacked us..."
"Yes!" Linda gasped, her fingers clutching his arm. "Show them the monster she really is! Ruin her career, Ryan! Strip her of her title, just like she stripped us of our home!"
Ryan pulled out his laptop, his hands shaking with a desperate, pathetic hope. He began editing the footage from the bedroom camera, splicing together shots of Victoria holding the clippers, her face cold and smiling, while ignoring the context of what Linda had done to her first.
He drafted a lengthy, emotional email, addressing it to the executive board of Vanguard Development and several local news outlets.
“My name is Ryan Coleman, husband of Victoria Coleman, your newly appointed Commercial Director. I am writing to you in deep concern for my wife's mental stability and the safety of our family. Last night, Victoria suffered a severe psychological breakdown. She violently shaved her own head, destroyed our family home, and has since used her corporate wealth to evict my elderly, sick mother and myself onto the streets. We are currently living in a motel, fearing for our lives. Please see the attached video of her erratic, dangerous behavior.”

He pressed Send.
"There," Ryan whispered, a cold, desperate smile returning to his lips. "Let's see how Vanguard likes their new director now."
