Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of the Weak

The fall of Ryan and Linda Coleman was swift and complete.
Within forty-eight hours of the board meeting, the Arlington Heights Herald retracted their initial story and published a massive, front-page exposé detailing the true nature of the assault on Victoria. The headline read: “Local Executive Mutilated by Family in Financial Extortion Scheme.”
The public backlash was immense.
The motel where Ryan and Linda were staying was flooded with reporters and protesters. They couldn't even step outside to buy food without being recognized and filmed.
On Friday afternoon, the Cook County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the motel.
Linda was arrested in her room, her screams of "I am a traditional lady!" echoing through the dirty parking lot as she was led away in handcuffs.
Ryan was arrested as well, charged with conspiracy, filing a false report, and extortion. As he was led to the police cruiser, he saw a black town car parked across the street.
The window rolled down.
Victoria sat in the back seat, wearing her exquisite designer sunglasses, her bald head looking like a sculpture of pure victory. Beside her sat Arthur Vance, holding the final, signed divorce decree.
She didn't say a word. She didn't need to.
She simply rolled up the window, and the town car pulled away into the bright, sunny afternoon, leaving him to face the cold, gray walls of a holding cell.
With the evidence of the security footage and the financial records of Linda's embezzlement from her own family trust, the trial was a mere formality.
Linda was sentenced to four years in a medium-security correctional facility.

Ryan, pleading guilty to lesser charges to avoid a longer sentence, was sentenced to two years of probation, 500 hours of community service, and ordered to pay full restitution to Victoria—a debt that would hang over his head for the rest of his natural life.
The golden cage they had built to trap her had instead become their own prison.
