Chapter 8 - The Backfire

On Thursday morning, Victoria was sitting in a high-level meeting with the executive board of Vanguard Development. They were discussing a multi-million-dollar commercial acquisition in downtown Chicago.

The projector screen at the end of the long conference table suddenly flickered.

Harrison Cole, the CEO, looked up as his assistant entered the room, her face pale, holding a tablet. "Mr. Cole, we have a major PR issue. An email was sent to the entire board, and it’s just been leaked to the Arlington Heights Herald."

Victoria didn't flinch. She sat in her chair, her bald head looking striking against her dark navy blazer, her expression entirely calm.

"Play it, Harrison," Victoria said, her voice smooth.

The assistant connected the tablet to the projector. Ryan’s edited video played. It showed Victoria standing in the bathroom, cold and smiling, shaving her head. It was accompanied by Ryan’s dramatic voiceover and photos of Linda crying on the curb.

The board members gasped, murmuring among themselves. Some looked at Victoria with concern, others with suspicion.

Harrison Cole looked at Victoria, his brow furrowed. "Victoria... what is this?"

Victoria stood up. She didn't offer a dramatic defense. She simply opened her own leather portfolio and pulled out a USB drive.

"Harrison," Victoria said, her voice carrying to every corner of the silent boardroom. "My ex-husband and his mother have been planning a smear campaign since I refused to resign my position and hand over my financial assets to them. What they didn't realize is that my townhouse is equipped with a comprehensive smart-home security system that records both audio and video in high definition—saved directly to a secure cloud server they couldn't access."

She handed the USB drive to the assistant. "Please play the file labeled 'Monday Night_Full.'"

The screen flickered again.

This time, the video showed Victoria sleeping peacefully in her bed. It showed Linda entering the room, holding the clippers with a look of pure, unchecked malice. It captured the sound of the clippers turning on, the raw scrapes left on Victoria's scalp, and Linda’s cold, triumphant words: “If you plan on staying married to my son, tomorrow you'll quit your job and learn how to behave properly.”

It showed Ryan entering the room, shrugging at his wife’s bleeding head, and saying: “Hair grows back. Obey.”

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear a pin drop on the thick carpet.

Harrison Cole’s face went from pale to a deep, furious red. He stood up, his hand slamming onto the table. "This is... this is criminal assault! This is domestic torture!"

"It is, Harrison," Victoria said, her voice steady. "And as of this morning, the Cook County State's Attorney has officially filed charges against Linda Coleman for aggravated battery and elder abuse—given my grandmother’s trust funds she also embezzled—and against Ryan Coleman as an accessory after the fact and for filing a false police report."

She looked around the room, her eyes locking onto each board member. "I chose to shave the rest of my hair to regain control of my own body, not because of a breakdown. I refused to let their violence be my humiliation. Now, I ask you: does this board stand with its Commercial Director, or do we yield to the blackmail of abusers?"

Harrison Cole didn't hesitate. He walked over to Victoria, taking her hand in a firm, warm shake.

"Vanguard stands with you, Victoria," Harrison said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "And we will use our entire corporate legal team to ensure those monsters spend the next ten years behind bars."
