Chapter 3 - THE RAT IN THE REFINERY

By one o'clock in the morning, the rain had tapered off into a thick, clinging fog that hovered over the city streets.

Inside Vance’s operational office, four federal agents wearing dark civilian jackets over tactical vests sat around a glass conference table. At the head of the table sat Special Agent Sarah Miller—a sharp-eyed woman in her late thirties with her dark hair pulled tightly into a tactical bun.

On the main monitor, an encrypted live feed displayed a satellite thermal layout of Adrian’s estate.

"We have a temporary federal emergency hold approved by Judge Harrison out of the Northern District," Agent Miller announced, laying out a series of printed search warrants. "However, because the property is heavily fortified with automated gates, private security guards, and illegal surveillance feeds, a standard tactical entry risks Adrian’s team destroying evidence or forcibly sedating the victim before we breach the main floor."

"What about Marta?" I asked anxiously, sitting at the edge of my chair. "She’s still inside. If Adrian realizes she called us, she is in immediate danger."

"Marta is our inside anchor," Agent Miller replied, tapping the screen. "At one-thirty AM, Marta is scheduled to open the utility access gate at the rear of the property to let out the commercial laundry van. That gate bypasses the main security console."

Suddenly, the encrypted red light on Thomas’s secure landline began to flash violently.

Thomas hit the speaker button. "Vance here."

"Thomas! They know!"

It was Marta. Her breath was coming in ragged, terrified gasps, accompanied by the muffled sound of footsteps echoing down a grand hallway.

"Marta, stay calm. Where are you?" Thomas ordered instantly.

"Dr. Vance... he checked the sedative inventory," Marta wept into the receiver. "He noticed two vials of the disorientation compound were missing from his bag! He told Adrian! Adrian realized someone in the house has been interfering with her dosage! They are searching the staff quarters now!"

In the background, a heavy door slammed shut, followed by the muffled, furious voice of Adrian shouting down a corridor: "Check her room! Check her phone logs!"

"Marta, listen to me very carefully," Agent Miller cut in, leaning over the speaker. "Is Claire conscious right now?"

"Yes, but she is weak!" Marta whispered hysterically. "They have her locked in the master suite upstairs. Dr. Vance has the secondary dose prepared. They are going to administer it in ten minutes and drive her to the private airfield in Westford!"

"They're accelerating the timeline," Agent Miller spat out, turning to her team. "Move the strike teams out now!"

"Wait!" I cried out, grabbing Agent Miller’s arm. "If your teams hit the main gate with sirens, Adrian will use the underground service tunnel that leads from the basement garage to the rear woodshed! Richard and I visited the house when they first bought it—the previous owner built a storm shelter tunnel during the cold war!"

Thomas looked at me, his eyes wide. "Are you sure, Eleanor?"

"Yes! Adrian showed it to me three years ago when he was bragging about the property’s security features!" I said rapidly. "If he hears federal vehicles at the front, he will carry Claire through that tunnel to an off-site escape car!"

Agent Miller looked at the thermal map, tracing the tree line behind the estate. "She's right. There’s a secondary access road running behind the north perimeter wall." She looked down at me, her gaze hard and assessing. "Mrs. Bennett... you know the layout of that house better than any of my agents."

"Take me with you," I demanded without a second of hesitation. "I know where the master suite key override is kept. I know where the tunnel exit opens in the woodshed."

"Eleanor, it's too dangerous," Thomas warned, placing a hand on my shoulder.

"She’s my daughter, Thomas!" I shouted, tears spilling over my lashes, my voice shaking with a fierce, absolute power I hadn't felt in fourteen months. "I let him isolate her for over a year because I was afraid of pushing her away! I am not sitting in an office while that monster drags her onto a plane!"

Agent Miller looked at Thomas, then back at me. A faint, approving nod touched her lips. "Get her a tactical rain jacket and a comms earpiece. We move in five minutes."

May you like

Ten minutes later, I was seated in the back of an unmarked black tactical van, speeding through the foggy night toward the house that had become my daughter’s prison.

In my right pocket sat the silver earrings Claire had borrowed as a teenager—a small, tangible reminder of the girl who used to laugh in my kitchen, the girl I was going to pull out of the dark if it was the last thing I ever did.
