Chapter 4 - THE BREACH AT NORTH CEDAR

The black tactical van killed its headlights two hundred yards from the north perimeter wall of the estate.

The rain had stopped entirely, replaced by a thick, suffocating fog that swallowed the tall pine trees and turned the iron security fence into dim, ominous shadows.

Agent Miller adjusted her earpiece, her voice a quiet, precise whisper in the dark interior of the vehicle. "Team One is in position at the main gate. Team Two is holding the south driveway. Mrs. Bennett, you stay behind Agent Davis until we confirm the structure is secure."

"Understood," I whispered back, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Through my earpiece, I could hear the static hum of the federal radio network.

"Team One in position... three armed private security guards detected on the front porch... thermal shows activity in the upper master bedroom..."

Suddenly, a loud metallic CLANG echoed through the comms, followed by the frantic bark of a dog and shouting inside the staff quarters.

"Comms breach! They found Marta’s phone!" Agent Miller’s earpiece crackled with static. "Petitioner Adrian Miller has ordered immediate perimeter lockdown! Repeat, perimeter lockdown!"

"Go! Go! Go!" Agent Miller barked into her mic.

The rear doors of our van burst open. Four federal agents leapt out into the damp grass, their heavy boots moving silently toward the wooden fence surrounding the rear woodshed. I followed directly behind Agent Davis, my heart in my throat, my eyes searching the fog.

Before Team One could breach the front iron gates with their heavy rams, a brilliant white flare ignited near the front of the house, followed by the deafening scream of a master security siren wailing across the quiet valley!

WAAAH! WAAAH! WAAAH!

"They're blowing the evidence!" Agent Davis shouted, raising his rifle as we reached the small wooden door of the ancient woodshed.

He kicked the door open.

Inside, the shed smelled of damp cedar, saw dust, and gasoline. Sitting in the center of the concrete floor was a heavy steel trapdoor, its padlocks shattered and hanging loose.

A faint light shone up from the dark hole beneath.

"The tunnel," I gasped, pointing down into the dark. "It leads directly to the basement wine cellar under the main house!"

"Davis, take the lead with Mrs. Bennett," Agent Miller ordered through the radio. "Team One is clearing the front foyer now!"

Agent Davis descended the rusted iron ladder first, his weapon light cutting through the thick subterranean dampness. I climbed down right behind him, my leather shoes slipping on the wet rungs, my mind focused entirely on the image of my daughter.

The tunnel was narrow, constructed of old red brick and damp concrete arched overhead. Water trickled down the walls, pooling around our ankles as we hurried through the dark.

Up ahead, thirty yards down the passage, the heavy iron door leading into the wine cellar stood slightly ajar.

Through the crack, I heard the sound of glass breaking, followed by a harsh, cruel slap and a woman’s muffled scream.

"Claire!" I screamed, breaking past Agent Davis before he could grab my arm.

"Mrs. Bennett, wait!" he yelled.

I didn't care about tactical protocols. I didn't care about armed guards or federal orders.

I threw my shoulder against the heavy iron door, bursting into the cavernous, dimly lit wine cellar.

The scene before me was a nightmare realized.

On the concrete floor, Marta lay bleeding from a cut on her forehead, her hands bound behind her with plastic zip-ties. Near the central wooden tasting table stood Dr. Vance, his glasses askew, frantically shoving medical files and syringes into a leather duffel bag.

And near the far archway stood Adrian.

He was holding Claire by her arm, dragging her across the stone floor toward a secondary stairwell. Claire was barely conscious, her head rolling back, her pale lavender dress torn at the shoulder, her small fists weakly pushing against his chest.

"Let... me... go..." she moaned, her voice raspy and slurred from the drugs. "Adrian... please..."

"Shut up!" Adrian snarled, striking her across the face with the back of his hand, knocking her against the stone wall. "You're getting on that plane if I have to carry your corpse onto it!"

"ADRIAN!"

My voice echoed through the stone cellar like a crack of thunder.

Adrian whipped around, his face twisting into an expression of absolute, venomous shock as he saw me standing under the low archway, my eyes blazing with pure, lethal hatred.

"Eleanor?" he gasped out, his eyes widening. "How... how the hell did you get in here?"

"Get away from my daughter," I said, stepping forward, every fear I had carried for fourteen months vanishing into absolute smoke.

Adrian let out a manic, hysterical laugh, reaching into his suit jacket and pulling out a small black compact handgun. "You stupid, stubborn old woman! You should have stayed in your pathetic little bookstore! You think you can stop me?"

He raised the gun, aiming it directly at my chest.

Behind me, Agent Davis burst through the iron tunnel door, his tactical light blinding the room as his rifle leveled on Adrian.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!"
