Chapter 6 - THE ICU VIGIL

The sterile smell of antiseptic and rubbing alcohol filled the fourth-floor Intensive Care Unit at Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass window, the sun was rising over the city horizon, painting the early morning sky in brilliant ribbons of gold, rose, and pale amber.

Inside the room, the quiet was broken only by the rhythmic, steady beep... beep... beep... of the heart monitor connected to Claire's wrist. An IV drip was mounted beside her bed, slowly flushing the toxic cocktail of sedatives and synthetic disorientation compounds from her blood stream.

I sat in the plastic armchair beside her bed, holding her left hand between both of mine.

I hadn't slept in twenty-four hours. My green dress was wrinkled and stained with rainwater and cellar dust, my hair was a mess, but I refused to move an inch. I sat there watching every breath she took, every small twitch of her fingers, terrified that if I blinked, she might vanish back into the fourteen months of terrible silence.

The door clicked open softly.

Thomas Vance stepped into the room carrying two paper cups of hot coffee. He set one on the bedside table and pulled up a chair beside me.

"How is she doing?" he asked quietly.

"The doctor said her vitals are stabilizing," I answered, my voice raspy from crying. "They caught the toxic build-up just in time. Another two days of those high-dose injections, and she would have suffered permanent neurological damage."

Thomas let out a long, heavy breath, taking a sip of his coffee. "Dr. Vance is already talking to federal prosecutors. He surrendered his medical license three hours ago and turned over eight months of falsified psychiatric evaluations that Adrian paid him three hundred thousand dollars to write."

"And Adrian?" I asked, my tone instantly turning to cold iron.

"He's currently in federal custody without bail," Thomas reported with grim satisfaction. "The U.S. Attorney’s office launched emergency asset seizures on all of Apex Capital’s domestic shell accounts at six AM. They found evidence connecting Adrian to three similar estate-stripping schemes in Europe and California. He isn't getting out of prison for the rest of his natural life, Eleanor."

"Good," I whispered, squeezing Claire's warm fingers. "I hope he rots in the dark."

"What about Marta?" I asked, suddenly remembering the brave woman who had risked everything to save my life.

"She’s downstairs in the surgical ward," Thomas smiled warmly. "She needed four stitches on her forehead, but she’s going to be fine. Agent Miller confirmed that Marta will receive full immunity and a federal whistleblower protection award for her cooperation."

A quiet sound came from the hospital bed.

I whipped my head around.

Claire’s head moved slightly against the white pillow. Her eyelids fluttered, straining against the bright morning light filling the room, before slowly, weakly opening.

She blinked several times, her gaze drifting around the white walls, the IV line, the heart monitor, until her eyes finally locked onto me.

"Mom...?" she breathed out, her voice barely louder than a whisper.

I leaned over the bed railing, tears instantly blurring my vision as I wrapped my hands around hers. "I'm right here, sweetheart. I'm right here."

Claire looked at me, her eyes filling with a sudden, overwhelming wave of grief, horror, and profound realization. The fog of the drugs was clearing, leaving behind the raw, painful reality of everything she had endured over the last two years.

"I... I treated you so badly..." Claire sobbed out, her small frame shaking as tears spilled down her pale cheeks. "I said terrible things to you... I blocked your calls... I wouldn't let you see me... I thought... I thought he loved me, Mom... I thought I was losing my mind..."

"Shh... baby, no, no, no," I wept, leaning down and pulling her carefully into my arms, resting my head against her chest just like I used to when she was a little girl frightened by thunder. "You don't ever have to apologize to me. You were hurt. You were tricked by a monster. I never stopped loving you for a single second. Not for one day."

May you like

"I called you a judgment mother..." Claire sobbed hysterically into my neck, her weak arms slowly rising to wrap around my back, clinging to my green dress as if I were a life raft in a stormy sea. "You were just trying to save me..."

"We saved each other, baby," I whispered, kissing her soft hair, holding her tight against my heart as the gold sunlight flooded through the window, washing away the shadow of the house on the hill forever. "We saved each other."
