Chapter 4 - The Cleaning of the House

By seven o'clock the following morning, the storm that had been brewing over Lake Michigan finally broke, unleashing a freezing downpour against the towering glass windows of the Hale Manor.

In the ground-floor staff administrative office, Evelyn Vance—a sharp, fifty-year-old woman who had managed the estate's forty domestic employees for eight years—was sitting at her desk reviewing payroll spreadsheets.

The door swung open.

Marcus stepped inside, flanked by two armed security guards dressed in plain dark suits.

Evelyn looked up, her expression adjusting instantly into a polite, administrative scowl. "Marcus? What is the meaning of this? I am preparing the morning shift schedules—"

"Mr. Hale requires your presence in the study," Marcus said coldly.

Evelyn’s eyes flickered with a brief, almost imperceptible flash of panic, but she quickly recovered, smoothing her gray wool skirt as she stood up. "Of course. Is this regarding the incident at dinner last night? I heard rumors about Mr. Langford—"

"Move," Marcus commanded simply.

Three minutes later, Evelyn was escorted into Preston’s private study.

The room was vast, lined with thousands of rare leather-bound books, a massive fireplace, and a mahogany desk that overlooked the rain-swept gardens. Preston sat behind the desk, a laptop open in front of him, while Denise stood near the window, holding Mabel in her arms.

Evelyn stopped short when she saw Denise standing in the private study, dressed not in her maid's uniform, but in a soft cashmere sweater and trousers that had been brought from the estate's guest wardrobe.

"Denise?" Evelyn frowned, her tone dripping with corporate disdain. "What are you doing in Mr. Hale's private office? You should be down in the laundry facility—"

"Evelyn," Preston’s voice cut through the air like a steel blade.

Evelyn turned back to the desk, forcing a respectful smile. "Yes, Mr. Hale? How can I assist you?"

Preston didn't answer right away. He clicked a key on his laptop, turning the screen around so Evelyn could see it.

On the screen was a detailed bank statement from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands, showing six wire transfers over the last five months, totaling two point four million dollars from an entity named Rostov Import-Export.

Evelyn’s face turned gray.

"You approved the catering staff list for last night's dinner," Preston said softly. "You disabled the security camera covering the butler’s pantry between eight fifteen and eight thirty PM. And you gave Victor Langford the keycard to the private liquor cellar where my personal wine collection is stored."

Evelyn took a step back, her hands shaking as she reached for her purse. "Mr. Hale... I... I don't know what those bank statements are. Someone is trying to frame me—"

"Victor confessed twenty minutes ago, Evelyn," Preston said, standing up from his chair.

Evelyn froze. She looked frantically around the room—at Marcus standing by the locked door, at the armed guards in the hallway, and finally at Denise and Mabel.

Her polite facade shattered completely, replaced by an ugly, desperate rage.

"You stupid little bitch!" Evelyn spat, glaring directly at Denise. "You and your bastard child! You were supposed to be emptying the trash in the west wing! You weren't even supposed to be in the dining room!"

Denise pulled Mabel closer, turning her body to block her daughter from the woman's glare.

Preston walked out from behind his desk. He moved with a quiet, lethal speed, stopping directly in front of Evelyn. His height towered over her, his shadow completely swallowing her figure.

"You brought a Russian syndicate into my home," Preston said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "You compromised my safety, and you put an innocent child in danger."

"Rostov will destroy you, Preston!" Evelyn shrieked, tears of rage spilling down her face as Marcus grabbed her arms, pinning her wrists behind her back. "You think you control this city? Rostov owns the ports now! You're a dead man walking!"

"Rostov is five thousand miles away in Kiev," Preston replied coldly. "You, however, are right here."

He looked at Marcus. "Transfer her to federal custody via our contacts in the Department of Justice. Ensure the treason and attempted murder charges are filed in a non-bailable jurisdiction."

"Understood, boss," Marcus grunted, dragging the screaming woman out of the study.

As the heavy mahogany doors clicked shut, the office fell silent once more.

Denise stood near the window, her heart pounding, feeling the sheer weight of the war that was unfolding around her. She looked at Preston, who was staring out at the rain, his fists clenched tight at his sides.

"Mr. Hale?" Denise whispered softly.

Preston turned back to her. The cold, terrifying rage in his eyes vanished the moment his gaze landed on Mabel, who was watching him with wide, curious brown eyes.

"Are you alright, Denise?" he asked softly.

"I... I think so," she said, taking a timid step toward him. "Is it over?"

May you like

Preston walked over to them, stopping a foot away. He looked at the young mother who had spent four years hiding in the shadows of his house, and realized that her quiet courage was the only real thing in a world full of treacherous allies.

"No, Denise," Preston said gently, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "It's just beginning. But as long as you are in this house, no one will ever hurt you again."
