Chapter 9 - The Return to the Estate

By three o'clock the following afternoon, the sun finally broke through the clouds over Chicago, illuminating the snow-covered grounds of the Hale estate in a brilliant, glittering blanket of white.
A sleek black Mercedes pulled up the long, winding driveway, coming to a smooth stop in front of the grand stone entrance.
The rear door opened, and Preston stepped out. He looked tired, with dark circles beneath his eyes, but his posture was straight, his face completely clear of the dark shadows that had haunted him for years.
The heavy oak front doors swung open.
Denise stood in the entrance foyer. She wore a simple maroon wool dress, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. Beside her, Mabel was bouncing on her heels, wearing a bright yellow sweater, holding her trusty purple crayon.
When Mabel saw Preston walk through the door, her face lit up in a wide, toothy smile.
"Preston!" Mabel squealed, breaking away from her mother's side and running as fast as her small legs could carry her across the polished marble floor!
Preston dropped his leather travel bag, crouched down on one knee, and caught the little girl in his arms, lifting her high into the air as she giggled uncontrollably.
"Hey there, little bird," Preston smiled, kissing her forehead before setting her back down. "Did you keep your mother safe while I was gone?"
"I drew three pictures of Marcus!" Mabel announced proudly, pointing toward the library. "And I wore my magic bird necklace every single day!"
"Good girl," Preston murmured, ruffling her hair.
He stood up slowly, his dark eyes locking onto Denise, who was standing ten feet away, her hands clasped tightly together, her eyes shining with unshed tears of relief.
Preston walked over to her. He didn't say anything at first. He simply reached out, wrapped his strong arms around her waist, and pulled her tightly against his chest.
Denise let out a soft gasp before burying her face in his neck, her arms wrapping around his shoulders, holding him with every ounce of strength she possessed.
"I was so scared," Denise whispered into his coat, her voice shaking with emotion. "When Marcus said there was trouble in New York..."
"It's finished, Denise," Preston whispered back, his chin resting against her hair, his heart beating steadily against hers. "Rostov is gone. Victor and Evelyn are in federal prison. There are no more threats. No more hiding."
He pulled back slightly, his hands resting on her waist, looking down into her tear-filled brown eyes.
"Four years ago, you came into this house as an employee," Preston said softly, his voice echoing in the warm, quiet foyer. "You stayed in the background. You cleaned my rooms, you served my guests, and you made yourself invisible because you thought the world wouldn't let you have anything better."
Denise bit her lip, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks.
"I was an arrogant, cold man who thought money and power were the only things that mattered," Preston continued, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "And then your daughter saved my life... and you saved my soul."
"Preston..." Denise stammered, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Preston reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy-blue velvet box.
Denise gasped, covering her mouth with both hands.
Preston did not kneel—he stood before her as an equal, opening the box to reveal a magnificent, emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the afternoon sunlight, sparkling with pure, brilliant light.
"I don't want you to be my guest anymore, Denise," Preston said, his voice thick with deep, unshakeable emotion. "I want you to be my wife. I want Mabel to be my daughter. I want to spend the rest of my life building a family with the two of you in this house."
Denise looked at the ring, then up into the eyes of the man who had protected her, fought for her, and cherished her daughter as his own.
May you like
"Yes," Denise sobbed happily, throwing her arms back around his neck. "Yes, Preston! Yes!"
Preston laughed, pulling her tight against him, kissing her lips deeply, passionately, as Mabel cheered and danced in circles around their feet, waving her purple crayon in the air like a tiny wand of magic.
