Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Oligarch

The storm over New York had turned into a torrential downpour by midnight.
At Pier 17 along the East River, a ninety-foot luxury yacht named The Sea Tsar sat idling near the wooden docks, its diesel engines rumbling against the dark, churning water.
Dimitri Rostov hurried down the wooden plank, surrounded by his three remaining personal guards. His fur coat was soaked, his face pale with frantic desperation.
"Cast off!" Rostov screamed at the captain on the upper deck. "Cast off right now! We go into international waters!"
"Sir, the harbor patrol has issued a red alert!" the captain shouted back down through the intercom. "The river locks are closed!"
"I don't care about the locks! Ram them if you have to!" Rostov shrieked, pulling a satellite phone from his pocket to call his emergency extraction team in Canada.
BOOM!
A heavy blinding spotlight suddenly erupted from the darkness of the river!
A ninety-foot fast-attack patrol boat, painted matte black with no markings, cut through the fog, pinning The Sea Tsar in a beam of intense white light! On its deck stood three heavy caliber gun mounts, manned by tactical officers in full gear.
Simultaneously, three black SUVs tore onto the wooden pier, blocking the landward escape route completely.
Preston Hale stepped out of the lead SUV.
He had changed into a dark tactical jacket, holding a long-barreled shotgun across his shoulder. He walked slowly down the wooden pier toward the yacht, his footsteps echoing over the crashing waves.
Rostov backed up against the yacht’s brass railing, his silver pistol trembling in his hand. His three guards immediately threw their weapons into the river, dropping to their knees on the deck with their hands behind their heads. They knew when a war was lost.
"It's over, Dimitri," Preston called out over the roar of the wind and rain.
Rostov stared down at him from the deck, his eyes wild with terror and rage. "You can't kill me, Preston! I am a citizen of three countries! The diplomatic fallout will ruin you!"
"You tried to poison a child, Dimitri," Preston said softly, taking three steps up the gangplank until he stood on the deck, five feet away from the oligarch. "You tried to murder my family in my own home. Diplomatic fallout is the least of my concerns."
Rostov gritted his teeth, his eyes flashing with a sudden, suicidal madness. He raised his silver pistol toward Preston’s chest!
BOOM!
Preston fired a single round from his shotgun. The heavy slug struck the wooden deck inches from Rostov’s boots, shattering the thick oak planks into thousands of splinters and throwing Rostov violently off-balance!
Rostov fell backward, tumbling over the low brass railing, plunging forty feet into the freezing, black, swift-moving currents of the East River!
He surfaced three seconds later, screaming for help as the dark water dragged him under the heavy steel hull of the patrol boat.
"Preston! Help me!" Rostov’s voice rose above the storm, his hands clawing uselessly at the slick metal hull. "I'll give you everything! My accounts! The shipping routes!"
Preston walked to the edge of the railing, looking down into the freezing water at the man who had tried to destroy his life.
"Mabel sends her regards," Preston said quietly.
He turned his back and walked off the yacht. Two seconds later, the dark currents pulled Dimitri Rostov under the surface, swallowing him into the freezing abyss of the river.
Marcus walked up beside Preston as they reached the pier. "Federal agents are arriving at Pier 19 to secure the vessel, Mr. Hale. The Rostov Syndicate’s assets in North America have been officially seized."
Preston pulled his satellite phone from his pocket. He didn't check the news, he didn't call his corporate lawyers, and he didn't notify the board of directors.
He dialed the private line to his estate in Chicago.
The phone rang twice before a soft, anxious voice answered.
"Preston?" Denise whispered.
May you like
Preston closed his eyes, leaning against the door of his SUV, letting out a long, heavy breath that he felt like he had been holding for two weeks.
"It's over, Denise," Preston said gently. "I'm coming home."
