Chapter 4 - The Crack in the Marble

The silence that swept over the circle of guests was absolute. The soft clinking of champagne glasses stopped. The laughter of the nearby corporate sponsors died away.

Adrian stared at the paper in my hand as if it were a venomous snake. His face drained of color, shifting from smug arrogance to a pale, ghostly white.

"You're... you're lying," Adrian stammered, his hand twitching at his side. "That’s impossible. You couldn't get pregnant! We tried for three years! You had two miscarriages!"

"We tried for three years while you were taking fertility supplements behind my back and blaming me for every negative test," I said, my voice rising in tone so the surrounding crowd could hear every single word. "You signed a court affidavit during our divorce swearing you were sterile, Adrian. You used that lie to deny me spousal maintenance while you were funneling my money to Celeste."

"Mia, shut up!" Victoria Brooks hissed, taking a step forward and raising a trembling finger at me. "How dare you bring your illegitimate bastard’s fake paperwork to my son's wedding! Security! Where is security?!"

"Security won't be helping you tonight, Victoria," Julian Thorne’s voice cut through the air as he stepped up beside me, flanked by Marcus Hayes.

Adrian’s eyes widened as he recognized Julian. "Thorne? What the hell is going on here? Why are you with my ex-wife?"

"I’m here as Mia's financial representative, Adrian," Julian said coldly. "And Mr. Hayes here is her lead litigation counsel. We are here to serve you with a formal notice of emergency asset freeze."

Celeste’s eyes darted frantically between Adrian and Marcus. "An asset freeze? On what grounds? This is a private event! My father owns this venue!"

"Your father might own the venue, Ms. Montgomery," Marcus Hayes announced loudly, pulling a thick blue folder from his jacket and holding it up for the entire room to see. "But he doesn't own Vanguard Capital. Nor does he own the $4.2 million stolen from Mia Carter’s grandmother’s trust fund, which was transferred into Vanguard’s primary operating account six months ago using forged authorization signatures."

Gasps erupted from the surrounding crowd. Several high-profile investors from Vanguard Capital who were standing nearby immediately set their drinks down, their faces turning stern.

"Is this true, Arthur?" one of the major investors, an older man in a tux, called out toward a tall, gray-haired man who was rushing over from the VIP lounge.

Arthur Montgomery—Celeste’s father—arrived at the circle, his face flushed with anger. "What is the meaning of this commotion? Who are these people?"

"Dad!" Celeste cried out, her voice losing its polished composure. "They’re trying to ruin the wedding! Mia brought some fake baby papers and accused us of stealing money!"

"It’s not an accusation, Mr. Montgomery," Julian Thorne said calmly, pulling out a second document. "It’s a federal indictment. Two hours ago, the Northern District Court of Illinois granted an emergency injunction freezing all accounts affiliated with Vanguard Capital, Brooks & Associates, and Montgomery Developments pending a full forensic audit."

Arthur Montgomery froze. His eyes darted to Adrian, then to his daughter. "Adrian... what did you do?"

"I didn't do anything, Arthur!" Adrian yelled, sweat pouring down his forehead. "She’s lying! She’s bitter because I left her! She bribed a doctor to fake a DNA test!"

"Bribed a doctor?" I said, stepping right up to Adrian, staring directly into his panicked eyes. "You think Dr. Eleanor Vance—the head of Maternal Medicine at Northwestern—faked a court-certified genetic profile? You think the federal grand jury faked your digital signature on the offshore wire transfers?"

I leaned in, lowering my voice so only Adrian, Celeste, and her father could hear.

"You called me broken, Adrian," I whispered. "You called me barren. You left me on the floor of our bedroom crying after every loss, telling me I wasn't enough of a woman to give you a family. But while you were busy trying to destroy my life, my body was giving birth to your child. And now, that child owns every single asset you thought you were going to inherit today."

Celeste grabbed Adrian’s arm, shaking him violently. "Adrian! Say something! Tell my father this isn't true!"

Adrian looked around the room. The crowd of three hundred guests was no longer admiring him; they were whispering, pulling out their phones, and staring at him with looks of absolute contempt. His mother, Victoria, looked like she was about to faint, clutching her pearls with both hands.

"I... I need to talk to my lawyers," Adrian stammered, backing away.

"Your lawyers won't be answering their phones tonight, Adrian," Marcus Hayes said with a cold, victorious smile. "Because they were served with the same subpoenas thirty minutes ago."
