Chapter 9 - The Garden of Rebirth

Two years later.
Spring had arrived in Chicago, painting the city in vibrant shades of green, cherry blossoms, and golden sunlight.
The Carter Maternal & Pediatric Wellness Center had expanded to three regional locations across Illinois, helping over ten thousand mothers and children. It was now recognized as one of the premier healthcare initiatives in the Midwest.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, a grand family gathering was underway in the spacious backyard of my new home—a beautiful, restored historic house near Lake Michigan, featuring a large garden filled with blooming tulips, weeping willows, and a stone patio.
Aunt Clara sat near the patio table, showing Julian Thorne sketches from her newest international fashion collection. Dr. Eleanor Vance sat in a comfortable armchair, watching three-year-old Maya run across the lush green grass, wearing a yellow sun hat and chasing butterfly bubbles.
Standing near the outdoor grill, laughing and talking with my father’s old legal colleagues, was Gabriel.
Over the past two years, Gabriel had become the center of our lives. He had loved Maya with every fiber of his being, never hesitating to wake up in the middle of the night when she had a fever, teaching her how to ride a tricycle, and holding her hand on her first day of preschool. And for me, he had been a partner in every sense of the word—a man who celebrated my independence, honored my past, and cherished my future.
As the afternoon sun shifted, casting a warm golden glow across the garden, Gabriel walked over to me, holding two glasses of iced tea.
"Penny for your thoughts, beautiful?" he asked gently, slipping his free hand into mine.
I leaned my head against his shoulder, looking out at the laughter filling our yard. "I was just thinking about how impossible all of this felt three years ago. I remember sitting in that hospital bed, listening to Adrian on the phone, feeling like the world was closing in on me."
Gabriel raised my hand to his lips, kissing my knuckles gently. "And now you’ve built a world that nobody can ever take away from you."
Gabriel reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.
My heart skipped a beat.
The garden seemed to grow quiet as Gabriel stepped in front of me, looking into my eyes with an intensity of love and sincerity that brought tears to my eyes before he even opened his mouth.
"Mia," Gabriel said softly, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. "You are the strongest, most compassionate, and most breathtaking woman I have ever known. You rebuilt your life out of sheer courage, and you opened your heart to me when you had every reason to lock it away forever."
He dropped down onto one knee on the soft green grass.
In the background, Aunt Clara gasped softly, and Eleanor clasped her hands together in delight. Maya stopped chasing bubbles, running over to stand beside Gabriel, looking up at him with wide, curious eyes.
Gabriel opened the box, revealing an elegant, vintage platinum ring featuring a brilliant solitaire diamond surrounded by delicate sapphire petals.
"Gabriel..." I whispered, tears spilling over my eyelashes.
"I don't want to just be a part of your life, Mia," Gabriel said, his voice filled with unconditional devotion. "I want to walk beside you through every storm, every victory, and every quiet morning. I want to be the husband who honors you, and the father Maya deserves every single day of her life. Mia Carter... will you marry me?"
Maya reached out her tiny hand, gently patting Gabriel’s knee. "Say yes, Mommy! Say yes!"
Laughter broke through my tears. I knelt down on the grass beside Gabriel, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling him into a deep, loving kiss.

"Yes," I whispered against his lips, my voice full of joy. "A thousand times yes, Gabriel."
The entire garden erupted into cheers and applause. Julian raised his glass in a toast, Aunt Clara wiped away tears of happiness, and Eleanor beamed with pride as Gabriel slipped the ring onto my finger, pulling both me and little Maya into a tight, warm embrace.
