Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Façade

The grand wedding of the year had devolved into a scene of utter chaos within less than twenty minutes.
Arthur Montgomery, realizing his company's reputation was burning to the ground in front of his biggest financial backers, violently pushed Adrian away from his daughter.
"Get away from her!" Arthur roared at Adrian, his face purple with rage. "You used my daughter! You brought an offshore embezzlement scheme into my company!"
"Dad, no! It wasn't just Adrian!" Celeste screamed, her pristine white gown now looking utterly ridiculous against the backdrop of her meltdowns. "We needed the capital for the expansion! You told me to find funding no matter what!"
The crowd gasped again. Celeste had just inadvertently admitted to her father's knowledge of the illicit funding in front of three hundred witnesses—including two undercover federal investigators who had been standing silently near the fountain.
"Celeste, shut your mouth!" Arthur screamed, realizing what his daughter had just blurted out.
Meanwhile, Victoria Brooks rushed toward me, her eyes manic and her hands clawed. "You viper! You ruined my son’s life! You brought this trash into our family!"
Before Victoria could reach me, Aunt Clara stepped cleanly into her path, grabbing Victoria’s wrist with a grip of steel.
"Touch my niece, Victoria, and I’ll personally ensure your name is removed from every charitable board in this city before midnight," Clara threatened in a icy, sharp whisper. "You spent three years calling Mia barren. Now you get to spend the next twenty years visiting your son in a federal penitentiary."
Victoria staggered back, looking at her son.
Adrian was kneeling on the polished marble floor near the champagne pyramid, his head in his hands, completely broken. The arrogant man who had called me three days ago from Chicago, laughing about his new life, was now sobbing like a terrified child as his world shattered around him.
He looked up at me, his eyes wide and bloodshot. "Mia... please. We can talk about this. We can raise the baby together! I’ll leave Celeste! I’ll give you back the money! Just stop the lawsuit! Please!"
I looked down at him with a feeling I hadn't expected: absolute neutrality. There was no remaining anger, no desire for revenge for the sake of malice—only the pure, unyielding satisfaction of justice served.
"You don't get to touch my daughter, Adrian," I said quietly. "You gave up that right when you left me alone, when you lied to the court, and when you chose money over human decency. Maya will grow up knowing what a real family looks like. And it will never include you."
At that moment, the heavy double doors of the Grand Atrium swung open.
Four men in dark blue suits bearing gold federal badges stepped into the room, flanked by six uniformed Chicago police officers. The lead federal agent walked straight down the central aisle, his boots echoing off the marble floor.
"Adrian Brooks? Celeste Montgomery? Arthur Montgomery?" the lead agent announced, pulling a set of legal papers from his coat.
Adrian slowly stood up, shaking uncontrollably. "Yes?"
"I am Special Agent Vance with the Federal Bureau of Investigation," the officer stated clearly. "You are all under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and illegal financial conversion. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
The police officers stepped forward, pulling out heavy steel handcuffs.
Celeste screamed as the metal ratcheted around her wrists, her lace gown catching on the officer's tactical vest. Arthur Montgomery tried to argue, pulling out his phone to call his lawyer, but an officer immediately confiscated the device, cuffing his hands behind his back.
And finally, the officers stepped up to Adrian.
As the cold steel snapped around his wrists, Adrian turned his head toward me one last time. Tears were streaming down his face, ruining his tailored tuxedo.
"Mia... please..." he whimpered.
May you like
I didn't answer. I simply turned my back on him, slipping my arm through Julian Thorne’s, and walked toward the exit alongside Aunt Clara and Marcus Hayes.
Behind us, the Grand Atrium erupted into shouts, flashing news cameras from reporters who had been waiting outside, and the endless clicking of heels as three hundred wealthy guests scrambled to flee the sinking ship of the Brooks and Montgomery families.
