Chapter 7 - The Final Conspiracy

The revelation that Julian was orchestrating threats from inside his prison cell threw the federal investigation into overdrive. The next morning, Clara and Ryan found themselves in a highly secure FBI field office in downtown Chicago, the twins safely placed in an adjacent room monitored by armed federal federal agents.

Agent Harris, a stern woman with decades of experience in white-collar crime and cartel operations, threw a thick folder onto the table.

“Julian Vance didn't just have gambling debts,” Harris explained. “He was laundering money for an international corporate espionage ring known as the Vanguard Group. Your father, Richard Vance, discovered this weeks before his death. He didn't die of a heart attack, Clara. He was poisoned with an undetectable synthetic compound.”

Clara gasped, pressing her hand to her mouth. Ryan wrapped a supportive arm around her waist, his grip firm. “And Arthur?”

“Arthur was Vanguard’s legal cleanup man,” Harris said. “He’s currently singing like a canary in the next room trying to avoid a life sentence without parole. But Julian has nothing left to lose. He’s made a deal with Vanguard’s remaining operatives: if they extract him during his prison transport to the federal courthouse tomorrow, he will hand over the secondary access codes your father hid in his old childhood home.”

“The old house?” Clara looked up. “The estate in North Shore? It was auctioned off months ago to pay Julian’s initial debts.”

“Vanguard bought it through a shell company,” Ryan realized, his mind piecing the tactical puzzle together. “They don't just want the DNA. They think the physical master key—the hardware that overrides the entire blind trust—is hidden inside the house itself. Julian is going to lead them right to it.”

“Exactly,” Agent Harris nodded. “And we need you, Clara. Julian built the security system of that estate before it was seized. He knows how to bypass our tactical gear. But you know the layout better than anyone. If you help us bait them into the house during the transport ambush, we can take down the entire Vanguard leadership in one sweep.”

It was the ultimate gamble. To secure their tomorrow, they had to step back into the terrifying arena of their yesterday.
