Chapter 5 - The Fight for Life

The bright, sterile lights of the operating room blinded me as I momentarily drifted back into consciousness.
“We’re losing her blood pressure! Prep for an emergency C-section right now!” a voice shouted.
“The fetal heart rates are dropping! Baby A is bradycardic!”
I felt hands rushing over me, the cold sensation of antiseptic being wiped onto my abdomen, the sharp poke of an IV line. I couldn't feel my legs anymore—the epidural or spinal block was working—but the pressure and the absolute terror inside my chest were suffocating.
“My babies,” I tried to scream, but a plastic oxygen mask was clamped over my face.
“Clara, listen to my voice,” a doctor said, leaning over me. Her eyes were kind but fiercely focused. “I’m Dr. Evans. Your twins are in distress, and we need to deliver them right now to save their lives. I need you to stay with me. Breathe.”
I nodded weakly, tears streaming down into my ears.
The world became a blur of frantic motions, the clinking of surgical instruments, and the steady, terrifying beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor that suddenly began to slow down.
Beep…… beep…… beep……
“She’s crashing! Start a blood transfusion!”
I felt a strange, detached sensation, as if I were floating above the table. I saw my own pale face, the doctors working furiously, and then—the muffled sound of a tiny, fragile cry.
“Baby A is out. It’s a girl. Get her to the NICU team immediately!”
Seconds later, another cry, even fainter than the first.

“Baby B is out. It’s a boy. He’s not breathing properly—bag him! Get them both to the incubator!”
I wanted to see them. I wanted to hold Sophie and Lucas. But the darkness pulled me under once again, deeper this time, into a silent, numbing void.
