Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past

The Vance estate in North Shore was a dark, gothic mansion overlooking the stormy waters of Lake Michigan. It was the place where Clara had suffered through her stepmother’s cruelty and Julian’s insidious bullying. Returning here felt like walking into a cemetery of her own childhood.
The FBI had turned the dark corridors into a tactical kill zone. Hidden cameras were placed in every room, and sharpshooters were positioned in the high rafter ceilings. Clara and Ryan stood in the hidden surveillance van parked half a mile away, watching the monitors.
At exactly 2:00 AM, the video feeds showed a blacked-out transport van crashing through the estate’s iron gates.
Three men armed with automatic weapons stepped out, followed by Julian, dressed in a bright orange prison jumpsuit but stripped of his handcuffs. He looked gaunt, desperate, and driven by a manic energy.
“It’s in the library,” Julian’s voice came through the audio feed as he pushed open the heavy oak doors of the mansion. “My stepfather was obsessed with physical backups. The master override drive is hidden behind the portrait of Clara’s mother.”
Clara gripped Ryan’s hand so tightly her knuckles turned white. “He’s lying. There’s nothing behind my mother’s portrait. My father would never put anything near her image that could bring harm to me.”
“He’s baiting his own partners,” Ryan whispered, his tactical eyes scanning the screens. “Look at his posture. He’s positioning himself near the emergency exit staircase.”
On screen, the Vanguard leader, a tall man in a tailored trench coat, pulled down the portrait of Clara’s mother, revealing only a solid brick wall.
“You lied to us, Julian,” the leader growled, raising his weapon.

“No! Wait!” Julian shrieked, backing away toward the stairs. “The encryption requires an external prompt! Clara has to initiate it from outside! She’s here, I know she’s here!”
Suddenly, Julian pulled a small device from his jumpsuit pocket—a stolen guard’s radio modified into an improvised explosive detonator. He didn't want the patent. He wanted to destroy the estate, the FBI, and everyone who had exposed his failures.
