Chapter 5 - The Glass Room

Three weeks later.

The high-ceilinged library of Evelyn Calloway’s estate was lit by the soft afternoon light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling bay windows.

Out on the expansive green lawn, three-year-old Maisie sat in a wooden sandbox, happily building a small castle with a yellow plastic bucket. Beside her sat Marta, the private nurse, gently pouring water from a small watering can onto the sand.

Maisie didn't flinch at the sound of the water. She laughed, dipping her hands into the damp sand, her small face bright, rosy, and filled with childhood innocence once again.

Inside the library, Detective Miller set a final thick case file onto Evelyn’s desk.

"Gideon Voss was arrested in Panama City six hours ago by federal marshals," Miller reported, taking a seat in the leather armchair. "He’s being extradited to Chicago on federal racketeering and wire fraud charges. He'll spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security prison."

"And Clara?" Evelyn asked quietly, gazing out the window at her granddaughter.

"Clara Voss pleaded guilty to felony child endangerment, corporate fraud, and identity theft," Miller said. "Because of her full cooperation in exposing her father's offshore banking network, the judge sentenced her to twelve years without parole. She won't be coming near your family ever again."

"And Grant?"

Miller hesitated, her expression turning somber. "Grant accepted a plea bargain. Ten years at the regional correctional facility. He waived all parental rights to Maisie. He signed full legal custody over to you this morning."

Evelyn picked up a small silver framed photograph resting on her desk. It showed Grant as a five-year-old boy, sitting on his father Richard’s shoulders at the beach, both of them laughing under the bright summer sun.

A single tear escaped Evelyn’s eye, tracing down her weathered cheek before she wiped it away with a linen handkerchief.

"He was my son, Sarah," Evelyn whispered softly. "I tried so hard to give him everything after Richard died. But I couldn't protect him from his own weaknesses."

"You protected the one who mattered, Evelyn," Miller said gently, standing up and reaching across the desk to squeeze the older woman’s hand. "You saved Maisie."
