Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Past

Two months later.

The legal proceedings surrounding Calloway Enterprises were finally reaching their conclusion.

Evelyn sat in Arthur Pendelton’s historic law office downtown, reviewing the restructured corporate charter. Under Arthur’s guidance, eighty percent of the company’s real estate assets had been placed into an irrevocable blind trust, designated solely for the future benefit of Maisie Calloway upon her twenty-fifth birthday.

The remaining twenty percent was donated to the Northfield Child Protection Services Foundation to establish a new emergency shelter for abused and neglected children—named The Richard and Maisie Calloway Haven.

"You've done a magnificent thing, Evelyn," Arthur said, signing his name as court-appointed trustee at the bottom of the document. "Richard would be immensely proud of you."

"Richard always said that money without purpose is just poison, Arthur," Evelyn replied, closing the leather binder. "Gideon Voss spent forty years destroying lives for numbers on a paper ledger. In the end, he lost his freedom, his wealth, and his only daughter."

"And what about you, Evelyn?" Arthur asked softly, looking at his old friend over his spectacles. "Are you at peace?"

Evelyn stood up, looking out the grand window of the office toward the bright blue horizon over the Blackwood River.

"I spent two months knocked out by grief and confusion, Arthur," Evelyn said, a soft, genuine smile finally gracing her lips. "I thought I was just an old grandmother trying to drop off rabbit cookies. But God gave me the strength to tear down that locked door."

"And Maisie?"

"Maisie is sleeping through the night," Evelyn said, her eyes shining with joy. "And yesterday morning... she helped me shut the nursery door all by herself."
