Chapter 8 - The First Rain

Autumn arrived in the Hudson Valley with a brilliant explosion of amber, crimson, and gold leaves covering the lawn of the Calloway estate.
A gentle afternoon rain began to fall, tapping softly against the glass windows of the kitchen.
Inside, three-year-old Maisie sat on a high stool at the marble kitchen counter, wearing a little yellow apron covered in flour. In front of her lay a wooden baking board, a rolling pin, and a tray of sweet pastry dough.
Evelyn stood beside her, gently guiding the little girl's hands as they pressed a tin cookie cutter into the dough, shaping little rabbit figures.
The sound of the rain outside grew louder, water rushing down the copper gutter pipe beside the window.
Maisie stopped rolling the dough. Her small hands paused, her hazel eyes turning toward the window as she listened to the rushing water.
Evelyn held her breath, her hand resting softly on her granddaughter's shoulder, ready to pull her close if the panic returned.
Maisie looked at the window, then looked up at Evelyn.
"Grandma?" Maisie asked quietly.
"Yes, my darling?"
"The rain is washing the trees," Maisie said, a sweet, thoughtful smile spreading across her small face.
"Yes, sweetie," Evelyn whispered, tears of profound relief filling her eyes. "The rain is just washing the trees."
Maisie picked up the rabbit cookie cutter, pressing it firmly into the dough with a happy little laugh. "Let's make two for Marta, and one for the birds!"

Evelyn wiped a drop of flour from Maisie's nose, pulling the child into a warm, fierce embrace, kissing her soft cheek.
The dark shadows of the flooded room, the wicked stepmother, and the cold greed of Gideon Voss had faded into distant memories, washed away by the tide of a mother's relentless, unyielding love.
