Chapter 3 - The DeLuca Cipher

The lake house was a fortress of glass and dark timber perched high on a cliff overlooking the stormy gray waters of Lake Michigan, fifty miles north of the city.

Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows as dawn broke over the horizon. Inside, a fireplace crackled, casting a warm orange glow over the sleek modern living room.

Elena sat at a large mahogany desk, her fingers moving delicately across the surface of a heavy steel notebook—a encrypted mechanical ledger Marcus had retrieved from Adrian’s primary vault before they fled.

Adrian stood near the glass, wearing a clean black sweater and dark trousers, a mug of steaming black coffee in his hand. He watched her. For hours, she had sat there, feeling the micro-engravings on the steel plates of the DeLuca transaction log—a physical codebook the mafia used to prevent digital hacking.

“It’s a double-layered tactile cipher,” Elena said, breaking the silence. Her fingers paused over a series of raised braille-like dots near the edge of the fifth metal leaf. “The DeLucas thought they were being clever by using blind artisans to engrave their off-ledger bank accounts.”

“Can you read it?” Adrian asked, walking over and placing a cup of tea near her hand.

“It’s not braille,” she explained, taking a sip of the tea and smiling faintly at the taste of honey and lemon. “It’s music theory.”

Marcus, who was standing near the secure communications console in the corner, looked up. “Music?”

“The spacing of the bumps corresponds to staff lines,” Elena said. “It’s a score by Bach—the Goldberg Variations. But the notes are altered. The deviations in pitch represent numeric coordinates.”

She closed her eyes, running her index finger across the row of raised metal bumps. “Account numbers in Zurich... property deeds in Miami... and a logistics manifest for a warehouse in the Port of Chicago.”

Adrian leaned over the desk, resting his palms on the wood beside her. “What’s in the warehouse?”

“A shipment arriving tonight at midnight,” Elena whispered, her eyes opening, staring into the void with absolute clarity. “Not weapons. Not drugs. It’s the second half of the Russian imperial collection—the Romanov Scepter. But it’s not just an artifact, Adrian. The cipher notes that the scepter holds a master drive containing the identity of every corrupt official, judge, and law enforcement officer on the DeLuca payroll.”

Adrian’s breath hitched slightly. “The skeleton key to the entire Midwest underworld.”

“And there’s more,” Elena added, her voice dropping. “The code lists the buyer who funded the bomb at the auction. It wasn't just Vincent DeLuca.”

Adrian’s voice turned dangerously quiet. “Who was it?”

“Arthur Crowe,” Elena said, her voice filled with a cold, sharp edge. “Madison’s father.”

The room went dead silent save for the crackle of the fireplace.

“Crowe Pharmaceuticals,” Marcus muttered, horrified. “They wanted the DeLucas to eliminate Adrian so they could take over the shipping lanes to distribute their synthetic opioids nationwide without interference.”

“And Madison knew,” Elena said, her memory flashing back to the cruelty in Madison’s voice when she had stepped on her heel. “She didn't just want to humiliate me because I was blind. She knew I was an authenticator. She was terrified I would discover the eagle was a fake before Adrian walked up to place his bid.”

Adrian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin. The thought of those arrogant, gilded parasites mocking Elena, pushing her to the floor while secretly plotting a bloody massacre, filled him with a cold, unrelenting vengeance.

He walked around the desk, stopping beside her chair. He reached down, placing his hand over hers on the metal ledger.

“They tried to break you on a ballroom floor,” Adrian said softly, his voice trembling with quiet fury. “They treated you like a piece of garbage in front of the whole city.”

“I’m used to it, Adrian,” Elena said quietly. “To people with money and sight, disability is just a target.”

“Not to me,” Adrian declared fiercely. He leaned down, his face inches from hers. “To me, you are the smartest, most dangerous woman in this city. And together, we are going to burn their empire to the ground.”

Elena felt a warm spark ignite in her chest. For years, she had been treated with either pity or contempt. Authenticating artifacts had been her quiet refuge, a way to survive in a world that refused to see her worth. But Adrian Vale looked at her—not with pity, not with condescension—but as his equal. His partner.

“So what’s our plan?” Elena asked, a confident, lethal smile spreading across her lips.

“Tonight, the DeLucas and Arthur Crowe are meeting at the port to inspect the scepter,” Adrian said. “Dominic will be there to collect his payment for setting the bomb.”

“And us?”

“We are going to crash their reunion,” Adrian said, his fingers tightening around hers. “And this time, Elena, you’re going to be the one holding the gavel.”
