Chapter 8 - The Symphony of Deception

Forty-eight hours later.

The penthouse suite of the Ritz-Carlton overlooking Central Park was dead silent. Rain tapped gently against the double-paned glass windows.

Sitting across a long glass table from Adrian and Elena was Don Antonio Moretti—an elderly man with snowy white hair, tailored Italian silk suits, and cold, ruthless dark eyes. Surrounding him were four heavy bodyguards, their hands resting inside their tailored coats.

On the table between them lay the Romanov Scepter—or what appeared to be the scepter.

“You came quickly, Vale,” Antonio Moretti said, his voice like gravel scraping over slate. He glanced at Elena with condescending curiosity. “And you brought your famous oracle.”

“Miss Hart is my partner,” Adrian said coldly, his arm slung over the back of Elena’s chair, his posture relaxed yet ready to kill at a second’s notice. “She doesn't travel without me, and I don't make deals without her.”

Don Antonio chuckled dryly. “A billionaire letting a blind woman run his operations. How romantic. But let’s get down to business. The master drive inside that scepter contains five hundred million dollars in Moretti offshore routing numbers. Give me the drive, and Chicago remains yours. Refuse, and your new legitimate company will crumble under a hundred invisible fires.”

Elena leaned forward, resting her elbows on the glass table.

“You’re bluffing, Don Antonio,” Elena said smoothly.

Don Antonio’s eyes narrowed. “Excuse me?”

“The Moretti family lost control of those accounts three days ago,” Elena said, her tone as casual as if she were discussing the weather. “When I decrypted the cipher from the DeLuca ledger, I didn't just extract the account numbers. I traced the routing signatures. The master drive doesn't hold your money—it holds the authorization key to the federal seizure warrants currently being executed in Manhattan, Zurich, and the Cayman Islands.”

Don Antonio froze. The color drained rapidly from his weathered face.

“You’re lying,” one of Moretti’s bodyguards barked, reaching for his firearm.

Click.

Before the guard’s hand could clear his holster, Marcus and three Vale Logistics operatives stepped out from concealed alcoves behind the heavy velvet drapes, their red laser sights pointing directly at the heart of every guard in the room.

“Don’t,” Adrian warned softly. “My men don't miss.”

Elena stood up slowly, picking up the scepter from the table. She ran her fingers across the golden shaft, smiling faintly.

“This scepter is a masterwork forgery,” Elena stated calmly, holding it up. “I made it myself over the last forty-eight hours. The gold is copper-plated alloy. The jewels are high-grade glass. But inside...”

She pressed a subtle release catch on the filigree top. A tiny, high-frequency tone emitted from the artifact—a signal audible only to precise equipment.

Outside the hotel window, two heavy black police helicopters descended through the fog, their powerful spotlights illuminating the penthouse suite in blinding white light.

“Inside is an active federal homing beacon,” Elena concluded, placing the fake scepter back on the glass table with a quiet clack. “The FBI Manhattan Field Office has been tracking this meeting since we crossed state lines.”

The heavy oak suite doors were instantly kicked open.

“FBI! Don’t move! Hands on your heads!” shouted dozens of armed federal agents, pouring into the room led by Prosecutor Sarah Lin.

Don Antonio Moretti slumped back into his leather chair, staring at Elena in utter shock and defeat.

“Who... what are you?” Antonio whispered, his voice trembling.

May you like

Elena smiled, taking Adrian’s offered hand as he stepped beside her.

“I’m the woman who heard you coming,” Elena said softly.
