Chapter 2 - The Sound of the Shattered Vows

The silence that gripped the grand ballroom of the St. Regis was absolute, save for the hum of the central heating and the ragged, panic-stricken breathing coming from the altar. The wedding guests—a sea of high-society figures, corporate executives, and local politicians—sat frozen in their rows. The velvet winter roses under the arch seemed to wither under the sudden change in the room's atmosphere.
Vanessa’s hand slipped from Daniel’s arm, her perfectly manicured fingers trembling as she looked between me and the man she was seconds away from marrying. "Daniel?" she hissed, her voice cutting through the quiet like a razor. "What is this? Who is this woman? You told me she was dead! You told me she took Lily and ran off to Europe with the stolen money!"
Daniel couldn't answer her. His gaze remained locked on me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish gasping for air. The handsome, composed tech executive who had spent the last five months playing the tragic, abandoned father had vanished. In his place stood a terrified boy whose worst nightmare had just walked through the double doors.
"She isn't dead, Vanessa," I said, my voice carrying clearly to the very back of the hall. I took three steps forward, the train of my white dress sweeping across the rose petals scattered on the floor. "And she didn't steal a single dime. But your groom certainly tried to."
"Get out!" Daniel finally found his voice, though it cracked with a mixture of rage and terror. He stepped down from the altar, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. "Security! Where the hell is security? Remove this lunatic from the building! She’s unstable! She’s trying to ruin my family!"
"Your security team won't be coming, Daniel," a calm, authoritative voice spoke from the back of the room.
Detective Mara Ruiz stepped through the double doors, flanked by four uniformed police officers and two federal investigators. She wore a dark gray trench coat, her badge gleaming under the crystal chandeliers. "The security staff has been instructed to stand down by order of the State Attorney’s Office. Daniel Mercer, you need to step away from the altar and put your hands behind your back."
Vanessa gasped, stepping backward until her heel caught on her veil, tearing it from her hair. "Daddy! Do something!" she screamed, looking toward the front row where her father, Arthur Sterling—the billionaire founder of Sterling Enterprises and Daniel’s boss—sat with a face that had turned a dangerous shade of purple.
Arthur Sterling stood up, his voice booming through the hall. "What is the meaning of this insult? This is my daughter’s wedding! Whatever civil dispute this woman has with Daniel can be handled in a courtroom on Monday! Get these officers out of my sight!"
"This isn't a civil dispute, Mr. Sterling," I said, turning to look the old man dead in the eye. I lifted the silver recorder again, pressing the play button.
The audio system of the ballroom, which had been linked to my device by Detective Ruiz’s tech team ten minutes before I walked in, crackled to life. Daniel’s voice filled the entire room, amplified by thirty surround-sound speakers.
“You should have signed the policy papers... This will look like an accident. And the insurance money will go to me.”
Then came the sound of the howling mountain wind, the unmistakable slap of a physical strike, and the terrified, piercing scream of a three-year-old girl: “Daddy, please!”
The recording played for five more seconds—just long enough for everyone in the room to hear the roar of Daniel’s sports car engine as he accelerated away into the storm, leaving his wife and child to freeze in the dark.
A collective gasp rippled through the wedding guests. Several women in the front rows covered their mouths, tears springing to their eyes at the sound of Lily’s voice. The priest who was supposed to perform the ceremony stepped back, crossing himself, his eyes wide with horror as he looked at the groom.
"You monster," Vanessa whispered, staring at Daniel as if he had suddenly transformed into a corpse. She looked down at the diamond ring on her finger, the one he had bought using the emergency liquidation funds from my late father’s estate account. With a cry of disgust, she tore the ring off and flung it at his face. It struck his cheek, leaving a small, red scratch before bouncing onto the marble floor.
"Vanessa, no! It’s a fabrication! It’s an AI voice clone!" Daniel shouted, his voice reaching a fever pitch of desperation as he looked around the room for an escape route. But the windows were sealed, and the only exit was blocked by six armed officers.
"It’s a forensic baseline digital copy, Daniel," Detective Ruiz said, stepping forward with the handcuffs ready. "Verified by the state police crime lab and backed by the satellite GPS logs from your vehicle on the night of November 14th. You left your phone’s navigation system running while you drove away from the ravine. It matches the timestamp of the recording perfectly."

Daniel looked at me, the mask of the successful executive completely shattered. "Elena... please. Don't do this to me. Think of Lily. What will she think when she grows up and finds out her father is in prison?"
"Lily already knows what her father is, Daniel," I said, my voice dropping into a cold, flat register that cut through his whimpering. "She knows you’re the man who left her in the snow. And tonight, she’s watching me show the world exactly who you are."
