Chapter 7 - The Collapse of Sterling Enterprises

The headlines on Tuesday morning across the financial sector were devastating: Sterling Enterprises Implicated in Multi-Million Dollar Fraud Network; Federal Warrants Issued.

Inside the glass-walled boardroom of Sterling Enterprises, the atmosphere was chaotic. Shredders were running in the back offices, and twenty-four different administrative assistants were franticly packing personal effects into cardboard boxes as federal agents moved through the floor with asset seizure tags.

Arthur Sterling sat at his massive mahogany desk, his head bowed, surrounded by four corporate defense attorneys who were arguing in low, panicked tones about the terms of a potential plea agreement.

The double doors opened, and I walked in, followed by Marcus Vale and two compliance officers from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"Get out of my office, Elena," Arthur Sterling growled without looking up. "My daughter has left the state, Daniel is in a cell, and my legal team is already drafting the settlement check for your father’s estate. You’ve won. Leave us alone."

"The settlement check isn't enough anymore, Arthur," I said, placing a thick leather binder of financial audits on his desk. "Marcus spent the night going through the ledgers you provided. You didn't just look the other way when Daniel brought the logistics software to the table. You used your secondary financing arms to fund the Indiana pharmacy that provided the calcium channel blockers Daniel was using to slowly poison my daughter before the blizzard."

The room went dead silent. The four defense attorneys stopped talking instantly, their eyes locked on the leather binder.

"That’s a lie!" Arthur shouted, slamming his hand against the desk as he stood up. "I had nothing to do with his personal marriage problems! I am a billionaire, not a murderer!"

"Your private foundation, the Sterling Heritage Fund, transferred two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to the Indiana shell company Aegis Digital three weeks before the incident on the mountain," Marcus Vale said, pointing to the transaction line displayed on his tablet. "The transfer was authorized using your private digital key, Arthur. Daniel didn't have access to that key. You signed the order yourself."

Arthur sank back into his high-backed leather chair, his face turning an old, weathered shade of gray. "He told me it was a investment in a medical startup... He said it was the company that was going to handle the distribution for the logistics software. I didn't know... I swear to God, I didn't know what he was buying with it."

"Ignorance is not a defense against a federal conspiracy charge, Mr. Sterling," the senior SEC officer said, stepping forward and placing a formal administrative cease-and-desist order on the desk. "Effective immediately, the trading operations of Sterling Enterprises are suspended by order of the federal government. All accounts are frozen pending a full forensic reconstruction of the corporate holdings."

Arthur Sterling looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city skyline he had spent forty years trying to conquer. He had built an empire of glass and gold, believing that his wealth made him untouchable. But like Daniel, he had built his fortress on sand, and the tide had finally come in.

"Your daughter will be picked up at the airport in Miami within the hour, Arthur," I said, turning back toward the door. "You should use your remaining phone call to find a criminal defense attorney who knows how to handle a federal racketeering trial. You’re going to need him."
