Chapter 5 - Shadows on the Pier

The wind off the Atlantic was brutal, carrying the scent of salt and decaying wood. I stood at the edge of the abandoned shipping pier, my trench coat wrapped tightly around me.
A black SUV pulled up, and Daniel stepped out. He looked around nervously, his collar turned up against the cold. He walked toward me, his hands buried deep in his pockets.
"You haven't changed, Claire," he said, trying to adopt a soft, familiar tone that used to make my heart melt. "Still stubborn. Still beautiful."
"Save the charm, Daniel. The girl who fell for that died five years ago," I said, not moving an inch. "Where's the money?"
"It's in an offshore account ready to be transferred to your name. Two million dollars," he said, taking a step closer. "All you have to do is sign an affidavit saying you made a mistake at the hospital. That the man you saw wasn't me. That it was a case of mistaken identity due to grief."
"And what about your new wife? Dr. Ortiz's patient?" I asked, watching his eyes. "What happens to her when the feds start digging?"
Daniel's face hardened, the mask of the loving husband slipping away to reveal the predator beneath. "Chloe doesn't know anything. She thinks I'm an independent tech investor. If you ruin this for me, Claire, I swear to God, I will make sure you don't survive the fallout. I managed to disappear once. I can make someone else disappear too."

"Is that a threat, Daniel?" I asked quietly.
"It's a promise," he snarled, reaching out to grab my shoulder.
