Chapter 7 - The Dominos Fall

The arrest of 'David Miller' sent shockwaves through the Boston financial elite. Within forty-eight hours, the federal government froze every asset tied to Mercer Construction, Nautilus Consulting, and the David Miller estate.

I sat in the observation room at the federal courthouse, watching through the one-way glass as Evelyn Mercer was brought in for questioning. She looked broken, her pearls replaced by a standard gray detention jumpsuit.

Faced with a twenty-year sentence for grand larceny and insurance fraud, she took less than ten minutes to sign a full state's evidence agreement against her own son.

"He told me he would take care of me," she wept into the microphone, her voice echoing in the observation room. "But he was transferring everything to Panama. He was going to leave me with the debt."

Next came Chloe, the young mother from the hospital. She arrived accompanied by her parents and a high-profile family lawyer. She was completely innocent—a victim of Daniel's elaborate fabrication. When Miriam Cole, my attorney, showed her the marriage certificates, the fraud records, and the timeline of our eleven-year marriage, the poor girl collapsed into tears.

"He told me his first wife died in a tragic car accident," Chloe sobbed, clutching her infant son to her chest. "He named our son after his 'late father'."

I walked into the room, bypassing the lawyers. Chloe looked up at me, terrified. I sat down next to her and handed her a tissue.

"He is a monster, Chloe," I said gently. "But you and your son are going to be okay. I'm going to make sure of it."
