Chapter 1 - The Paper Shield

The corridor outside the pediatric intensive care unit was dead silent, save for the hum of the fluorescent lights. Wanda, my sister, sat next to me on the vinyl chairs, her laptop open on her knees, while the lawyer she brought, Elena Vance, went through the five years of bank transfers and Western Union receipts.

"They used the guardianship papers as a weapon," Elena said, her voice sharp, professional, and entirely devoid of warmth for the people who had done this. "Gail and Holt legally tied your hands. Every time you asked for photos, every time you questioned the short phone calls, they used the threat of termination of parental rights. Under Ohio law, if a parent disappears or fails to provide support for a certain period, a legal guardian can petition for adoption. They made you think you were one wrong question away from losing Brinley forever, all while they pocketed your money."

I looked down at the gift bag sitting between my feet. The stuffed bear's head peeked out, its glass eyes reflecting the harsh hospital lights. "I was terrified, Elena. When you are thousands of miles away working twelve-hour shifts in a foreign country, you don't think your ex-husband's mother is a monster. You think she's just difficult. You think if you pay, your child stays safe."

The double doors at the end of the hall swung open. Detective Vance walked in, his face grim. He had a manila folder under his arm.

"Ms. Miller," Vance said, sitting opposite us. "We just tracked the cruise ship. It’s currently in international waters, heading toward Grand Turk. We’ve already contacted federal authorities. Because you wired money across international borders under fraudulent promises of childcare, this crosses into federal wire fraud and human rights violations. The FBI is stepping in."

"What about Derek?" Wanda asked, her knuckles white against her laptop.

"Derek’s phone records show he received a call from his mother exactly four minutes after you hung up on him," Detective Vance revealed. "Gail told him to go to the house and 'clean up the basement.' He didn't make it. We intercepted him two blocks from the residence. He’s currently in a holding cell down the street, screaming that he didn't know anything about the chain."

I stood up, the anger finally replacing the cold numbness in my limbs. "He knew. He might not have locked the chain himself, but he knew the money was coming in, and he knew his mother was using it to fund their lifestyle while my daughter was dying in the dark."
