Chapter 5 - The Leak in the Wealth

The federal grand jury indictment was unsealed a week later. Gail and Holt Merritt were charged with nine federal counts, including conspiracy, wire fraud, and interstate deprivation of civil rights.

But the real shock came when the forensic accountants dug into the Merritt family finances. The $600 a month I had sent, combined with the child support extracted from my tax returns, hadn't just paid for their cruises. Gail had opened a boutique clothing store downtown using my name as a co-signer, forging my signature via the old guardianship documents I had signed.

"She used your identity to pile up over forty thousand dollars in business debt," Elena Vance explained, showing me the corporate filings. "When the store started failing last year, she used Brinley as leverage to keep you paying more. The threat 'Pay or lose her' wasn't just cruel; it was her business model."

We went to the federal detention center where Gail was being held before her arraignment. She sat behind the plexiglass, looking smaller without her expensive jewelry and designer clothes, but her eyes were still full of poison.

"You think you're a good mother, Rachel?" Gail sneered into the intercom phone. "You left her. You went across the ocean for a job. I did what had to be done to keep this family afloat."

"You chained my daughter to a water pipe, Gail," I said, my voice completely steady, completely cold. "You fed her scraps. You let her collarbone heal broken without a doctor. You are not a grandmother. You are a predator."

"She was fine until you showed up!" Gail hissed, slamming her hand against the glass. "She was quiet! She knew her place!"

I hung up the phone. I didn't need to hear another word. I stood up and walked out of the visitor's room, leaving her screaming at the empty glass.
