Chapter 3 - The Interception

The next afternoon, the news broke on the local Dayton stations. A cruise ship passenger had leaked footage of the FBI boarding the Caribbean Star during its brief stop at Grand Turk.
The video was shaky, but clear enough: Gail and Holt Merritt, dressed in resort wear, being led down the gangway in handcuffs by federal agents and local authorities. Gail looked livid, her face red, shouting at the cameras, while Holt kept his face buried in his shirt.
In the courthouse downtown, Elena Vance was already filing the emergency motion to terminate the guardianship.
"We are going for total termination and sole legal custody with a protective order," Elena told me as we stood in the hallway outside the family court judge's chambers. "Derek’s attorney is trying to file for temporary custody, claiming that as the biological father, he has immediate rights if the grandparents are incapacitated."
"Over my dead body," I said, the fury rising again.
We entered the judge's chambers. Judge Miriam Brooks looked at the medical reports, the photos of the basement, and the financial records Elena laid out. Derek’s lawyer stood in the corner, looking uncomfortable.
"Your Honor," Derek's lawyer argued, "my client had no knowledge of his parents' actions. He lived in an apartment across town. He believed his daughter was being homeschooled and cared for."

Judge Brooks raised a hand, cutting him off instantly. "Mr. Merritt’s phone records show he attempted to enter the house after receiving a panicked call from his mother to 'clean up.' Clean up what, counselor? Evidence of child torture?"
She picked up her pen and signed the order with a aggressive stroke. "Temporary guardianship is terminated immediately. Sole legal and physical custody is granted to the mother, Rachel Miller. A permanent restraining order is issued against Derek Merritt and his parents. If any member of the Merritt family comes within five hundred feet of this child, they will be arrested on sight."
