Chapter 7 - Shadows of the Past

With Eleanor ousted and Richard Vance under federal indictment for fraud, peace seemed within reach. But six years of deep-seated trauma couldn't be healed overnight.
One evening, after the boys were fast asleep, I found Mara sitting alone on the balcony, watching the snow begin to fall gently over the city. She was wrapped in a blanket, staring into the dark distance.
I walked out and sat beside her, handing her a warm cup of cocoa.
"What are you thinking about?" I asked gently.
"I'm scared, Julian," she admitted, her voice barely audible above the winter wind. "This world... the cameras, the lawyers, the millions of dollars... it’s not who I am. I spent six years worrying about whether I could afford groceries or winter shoes for four growing boys. Now, overnight, they're heirs to a global shipping fortune."
"They're just boys, Mara," I said softly, taking her hand. "And you are their mother. No amount of money changes that."
"What if I can't fit into your world?" she asked, looking at me with vulnerability that broke my heart. "Brielle Cartwright had perfect manners, designer clothes, and a family with political power. I'm a former waitress from upstate."
"Brielle Cartwright was a transaction," I said, turning to face her completely. "You were my heart, Mara. When I lost my memory after the crash, the doctors told me I kept repeating one word over and over again in my sleep: Mara. I didn't remember my own name, but my soul remembered yours."
Tears glistened in her eyes as the snow dusted her hair.
"We don't have to live in this high-society fishbowl if you don't want to," I continued, kissing the back of her hand. "We can buy a house upstate. We can build a garden. We can live whatever life we choose. But I want to build it with you."
May you like
Mara leaned forward, resting her forehead against mine. "I never stopped loving you either, Julian. Not even when I was angry."
When our lips met beneath the falling snow, it felt as if six years of ice and separation instantly melted away.
