Chapter 8 - The Father's Duty

As spring approached, life began to take on a beautiful, chaotic rhythm.

I resigned from my high-stress corporate position as Managing Director of Sterling Global, appointing an independent, highly qualified professional Board of Trustees to run the company while retaining majority voting ownership. My new full-time job became much more demanding: being a father to four energetic six-year-olds.

It wasn't always easy. Milo was fiercely independent and tested boundaries constantly. Mason was quiet and needed extra encouragement. Max was hyperactive and got into everything. Micah was deeply sensitive and needed frequent reassurances that we weren't going to disappear.

One Saturday afternoon, I took all four boys to the park near our new townhouse in Brooklyn—a spacious, warm home with a big backyard far removed from the cold marble of Tribeca.

As they ran across the grass kicking a soccer ball, I sat on a bench watching them, feeling a deep, profound sense of fulfillment I had never experienced in any boardroom.

Suddenly, a ball rolled to my feet. Milo ran up, breathless, his gray-blue eyes sparkling with joy.

"Dad! Watch this!" he yelled, winding up his leg and kicking the ball toward a makeshift goal between two trees.

It went wild and hit a nearby fence with a loud thwack.

Milo's face fell, his shoulders slumping. "I missed."

I walked over, crouched beside him, and adjusted his posture gently. "You didn't miss, Milo. You just haven't learned the angle yet. Push your hair back, take a deep breath, and try again."

Milo pushed his hair back—that signature gesture we both shared—smiled brightly, and nodded. "Okay! Again!"

Watching him run back to his brothers, I felt a hand slip into mine. Mara stood beside me, wearing a warm yellow dress, her eyes soft with happiness.

"You're good at this," she whispered.

"I have six years of practice to catch up on," I said, pulling her close and kissing her cheek. "I'm not wasting another second."
