Chapter 3 - The Threat at the Hospital

The morning sun broke through the gray Chicago clouds, casting long silver beams across the high-rise apartments of the Gold Coast.
In the master bedroom of Asher’s penthouse, Lily and Maya were fast asleep on the massive king-sized bed, buried under mountains of Egyptian cotton sheets and plush blankets. Mrs. Gable sat quietly in an armchair near the window, watching them with a warm, protective eye.
Downstairs in his private study, Asher stood dressed in a dark charcoal suit, his tie knotted tightly, staring at the financial monitors displaying the morning market opening. Hale Global’s stock was soaring, but Asher hadn't looked at the numbers once.
His phone rang. It was an unlisted number.
Asher answered, placing it to his ear without a word.
"Asher," a smooth, cultured, yet venomous voice came through the speaker. "I hear you picked up a piece of trash in a grocery store parking lot last night."
Julian Vance.
Asher’s grip on the phone tightened until the casing creaked. "Julian. I was wondering how long it would take for you to call."
"Let's not play games, Asher," Julian scoffed coldly. "My daughter was an idiot who ruined her life five years ago. What happened to her yesterday was an unfortunate traffic accident. But whatever game you think you're playing by holding onto those two bastards, end it now. Hand them over to Child Protective Services, or I will leak to the press that the great Asher Hale is kidnapping children."
"Kidnapping?" Asher let out a low, bitter laugh that sent a chill down the line. "Julian, you ran your own daughter down in the street because she came back to Chicago to demand her inheritance for her children. You left her to die in an alley."
There was a sharp, dangerous pause on the line. Julian’s voice dropped into a rasping growl. "You have no proof of anything, Hale. Clara is brain-dead. She won't survive the week. And those two girls have no legal standing. They are nobodies. If you meddle in my family affairs, I will burn Hale Global to the ground. I'll destroy your acquisition, I'll destroy your stock, and I'll ruin you."
"Try it," Asher said smoothly, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I have more money than you, Julian. I have better lawyers, better security, and far less patience. If a single person from Vanguard comes within a mile of those children or their mother's hospital room, I won't just ruin your acquisition—I will systematically dismantle your life until you are living in the same wet parking lot where I found your granddaughters."
Asher hung up the phone without waiting for a reply. He tossed the device onto his desk, his chest heaving.
He walked out of his study and took the private elevator directly down to the basement parking level, where Vance was waiting beside a dark armored SUV.
"To Northwestern Memorial," Asher commanded, stepping into the back seat. "I want to see Clara Vance."
Ten minutes later, Asher walked through the restricted ICU corridor of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, flanked by two of Vance’s private security guards. The hospital floor was quiet, smelling heavily of antiseptic and industrial floor cleaner.
Through the glass window of Room 412, Asher saw the pale, broken body of Clara Vance. She was hooked up to a dozens of monitors, a ventilator pumping air into her lungs, thick bandages wrapped around her head and torso. She looked so young—barely twenty-seven—and her facial features were an undeniable, heartbreaking adult match for little Lily and Maya.
Asher stepped into the room, the steady beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor filling his ears. He stood beside her bed, looking down at the woman who had fought so desperately to keep her children alive against impossible odds.
"Clara," Asher said softly, his voice low in the quiet room. "I don't know if you can hear me. But your daughters are safe. Lily and Maya are at my home. They are warm, they are fed, and nobody is going to hurt them."
He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently closing over her pale, limp fingers.

"Your father thinks he can discard them," Asher whispered, his dark eyes burning with absolute, unshakeable resolve. "He thinks he can erase you and take everything. But he doesn't know who he's dealing with. I am going to heal your daughters, I am going to protect them, and when you wake up, I am going to make sure your father pays for every single drop of blood you lost."
As if responding to his voice, the heart monitor gave a tiny, subtle flutter, and Clara’s index finger twitched faintly against Asher’s palm.
