Chapter 7 - The Awakening

Three weeks passed.

Chicago was hit by a massive December blizzard that buried the city in three feet of pristine white snow.

At the Northwestern Memorial ICU, the heavy snow fell outside the window of Room 412, creating a quiet, serene world.

Clara Vance lay in her hospital bed. The swelling in her brain had finally subsided, the ventilator had been removed three days earlier, and she was now breathing on her own.

Sitting in the armchair beside her bed was Asher. He was dressed in a dark wool sweater, an open iPad on his lap, silently reviewing the final liquidation papers for Vanguard Holdings. Following Julian Vance’s arrest for conspiracy to commit murder and corporate fraud, Vanguard’s board had collapsed, and Hale Global had executed a hostile takeover, absorbing the multi-billion-dollar firm in its entirety.

Asher set the iPad down, rubbing his tired eyes. He reached over, taking Clara’s hand in his—a habit he had developed over the last twenty-one days, visiting her every single evening after putting the girls to bed.

Her hand felt warmer today.

Suddenly, Asher felt a soft, clear pressure against his fingers.

He froze.

Clara’s long eyelashes fluttered faintly. A tiny, raspy gasp escaped her throat as her head shifted against the white pillow.

"Clara?" Asher called out softly, leaning close to her face.

Her eyes opened slowly. They were a breathtaking, deep hazel—the exact same eyes that looked up at him every morning from Lily and Maya. She blinked against the bright hospital lights, her gaze unfocused, confused, and filled with instant, instinctual panic.

"My... my babies..." she whispered, her voice barely a dry thread of air. "Lily... Maya..."

"They are safe," Asher said instantly, his voice firm, calm, and soothing. He squeezed her hand gently. "Clara, look at me. My name is Asher Hale. Your daughters are safe. They are warm, they are fed, and they are at my home right now."

Tears instantly flooded Clara’s hazel eyes, spilling down her pale cheeks. "Where... where are they? Where is my cart?"

"You were in an accident, Clara," Asher explained gently, reaching for a cup of water with a straw and holding it to her dry lips. "Your father tried to hurt you. But it's over now. Your daughters have been with me for three weeks. They are safe, I promise you."

Clara took a small sip of water, her mind fighting through the thick fog of a three-week coma. She looked at Asher’s face—noticing the expensive clothes, the sharp jawline, but above all, the deep, profound sincerity and gentleness in his dark eyes.

"Why... why did you help us?" she whimpered, her body shaking with soft sobs. "We're nobody."

Asher looked down at their joined hands, a soft, self-deprecating smile touching his lips.

"Three weeks ago, I was a bitter, angry man who kicked a shopping cart because it was in my way," Asher said softly, looking back into her eyes. "Your daughters saved my life, Clara. Now, let me help you rebuild yours."
