Chapter 5 - A Fateful Encounter

The Grand Exhibition Hall in Oakhaven was a sea of glittering chandeliers, polished marble floors, and buzzing crowds. High-society elites, journalists, and corporate titans mingled among the displays of the country's brightest young minds.
Emily walked beside Leo, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She wore her best hand-me-down coat, her eyes darting nervously across the crowd, scanning every face, every security guard.
"Relax, Em," Leo whispered, nudging her side playfully. "You look like you're about to jump out of a window."
"I just... don't like big cities, Leo," Emily lied smoothly, clutching her purse tight against her side. Inside that purse, wrapped in velvet, lay the silver medallion Monica had handed her five years ago.
"Booth 42: The Solar-Membrane Desalination Unit by Leo Vance," the announcer’s voice echoed over the loudspeaker.
Leo proudly adjusted his cardboard display board as a group of judges in dark suits approached. Among them walked a tall man whose presence commanded instant, absolute silence from the crowd.
Julian Vance.
Emily froze. Her breath caught in her throat. She had seen his face in newspapers, but seeing him in person was breathtaking. He had the exact same brow, the exact same dark, intense eyes as the twelve-year-old boy standing beside her.
Julian was looking casually at the displays, clearly performing a routine corporate duty. But as he approached Booth 42, his eyes fell upon Leo.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks.
A sudden, strange chill rushed through Julian's veins. He stared at the boy. It wasn't just the boy's appearance—though his jawline and dark hair were carbon copies of Evelyn’s old family portraits. It was the way the boy stood, leaning slightly on his left foot, his chin tilted up with a fierce, quiet intelligence.
"And this... is your project?" Julian asked, his voice unexpectedly rough, stepping away from the other judges.
Leo didn't flinch. He looked directly into the billionaire's eyes and smiled confidence. "Yes, sir. It's a localized filtration unit. It uses low-voltage solar pulses to strip micro-contaminants from brackish water. Costs under thirty dollars to build."
Julian listened, stunned not just by the brilliance of the design, but by the cadence of the boy's voice. It felt like an echo from a dream he had been chasing for twelve years.
"What is your name, son?" Julian asked softly, stepping closer.
"Leo," the boy answered proudly. "Leo... Vance."
Behind the display, Emily felt the room spin. She stepped forward instinctively, putting a protective hand on Leo’s shoulder.
Julian’s eyes shot to Emily, then back to the boy. "Vance? That's your last name?"
"Our mother gave us that name," Emily interrupted quickly, her voice sharp with defensive terror. "We're from Seabrook, sir. We should go, Leo. The judging is over."
"Wait!" Julian reached out, his hand hovering in the air. "Please. I didn't mean to alarm you."

From the edge of the VIP balcony above, Arthur Vance looked down. He gripped the gilded railing, his knuckles turning white as he recognized the boy's face from the secret file he had tried to burn twelve years ago.
It's him, Arthur thought, a venomous panic surging through his chest. The bastard survived.
