Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Web

The rain poured in sheets over the Vance Estate. High walls, surveillance cameras, and armed guards guarded the multi-acre compound, making it an impenetrable fortress.

Inside his study, Julian Vance sat in dark silence, staring at the scientific report Leo had presented at the exhibition. He couldn't sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the boy's face.

Was it possible? Or was he just a desperate father losing his mind?

A sudden commotion erupted from the front courtyard. Alarms began to blare, red emergency lights flashing across the floor-to-ceiling windows.

"Sir! Stay inside!" Marcus, the chief of security, burst into the study with his sidearm drawn. "Someone just breached the east gate vehicle barrier!"

Julian stood up, ignoring the warning, and walked out into the grand foyer.

The heavy oak front doors burst open. Rain swept inside, followed by four guards trying to restrain a young woman. Her clothes were soaked, her coat torn, her hands covered in mud and cuts from climbing the iron fence.

"Let me go!" Emily screamed, kicking wildly at a guard's shin. "I need to see Julian Vance! Let me go!"

"Get her out of here!" Marcus ordered, raising his weapon.

"STOP!" Julian’s voice echoed like thunder through the grand hall.

The guards froze.

Emily broke free from their grip, stumbling forward onto the marble floor. She looked up at Julian, her hair dripping water, her eyes burning with a fierce, wild courage that stopped every man in the room in his tracks.

"You want to know who I am?" Emily gasped, reaching into her coat. "You want to know why that boy at the exhibition is named Vance?"

Marcus raised his gun. "Sir, step back—"

"Lower your weapon, Marcus," Julian commanded, staring down at the girl.

Emily threw something across the marble floor. It skidded, coming to a rest right at Julian’s polished leather shoes.

Julian looked down.

There, reflecting the light of the chandelier, lay the silver medallion. The double-headed falcon. The custom crest he had designed himself for his unborn son thirteen years ago.

Julian fell to his knees. His hands trembled violently as he picked up the silver coin. His breath hitched in his throat, a tear breaking free and carving a path down his weathered face.

"Where..." Julian’s voice cracked, choked with an emotion he hadn't felt in a decade. "Where did you get this?"

"My sister and I found your son in a trash heap behind the Old Market thirteen years ago," Emily said, her voice ringing out clear and strong. "We washed him, we fed him, and our mother raised him as her own son. And right now, your brother Arthur has arrested my sister and sent killers to take your boy!"
