Chapter 3 - The Broken Father

The corporate offices of Carter Logistics in downtown Columbus were quiet on Sunday afternoon. Mark Carter sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his eyes bloodshot, rubbing his temples in utter exhaustion. The storm in Chicago had delayed his flight by fourteen hours, and he had spent the entire night trapped in an airport terminal, his anxiety spiking with every passing hour.

He had married Diana because he thought she was an angel. After Sarah died, his world had collapsed into a black hole of grief and corporate pressure. Diana had stepped in, managing his house, organizing his life, and promising to give his grieving twins a stable, loving mother. He had thrown himself into his work to provide for them, believing his home was a sanctuary.

The heavy glass doors of his private office burst open.

Mark startled, standing up. "Diana? What's going on? I got your messages, the police called me—"

He stopped dead in his tracks. Diana wasn't alone.

Walking into the office behind her was Eleanor Vance, flanked by two tall men in tailored dark suits—the top family law attorneys in the state. And behind them, looking small but standing remarkably straight, were Lily and Noah.

"Mark!" Diana wailed, instantly throwing herself into his arms, her face a mask of frantic, terrified maternal panic. "Oh, thank God you're here! It’s been a nightmare! The police have been looking for them all night! Eleanor... Eleanor kidnapped them! She took them from the highway after they ran away from my car!"

Mark looked at his children, his heart dropping into his stomach. They were wearing expensive, clean clothes he had never seen before, but they looked so thin. So terribly thin. "Lily? Noah? What is the meaning of this? Eleanor, what have you done? You have no right to interfere with my family!"

"Your family?" Eleanor’s voice cut through the room like a physical blow. She didn't shout, but her authority was absolute. "Mark, you are a brilliant businessman, but as a father, you have been a blind, negligent fool."

"Don't listen to her, Mark!" Diana screamed, her voice cracking as she clutched his lapels. "The twins are unstable! They’ve been acting out for months, stealing from the kitchen, throwing tantrums! Yesterday, Noah attacked me in the car, and when I pulled over to calm him down, they both grabbed their bags and ran into the woods! Eleanor must have been tracking us!"

"Dad," Lily spoke up, her voice steady, cutting through Diana’s frantic lies. "She's lying. She's been lying to you for two years."

"Lily, don't speak to your father like that!" Diana snapped, turning around, her eyes flashing with a sudden, ugly malice that she quickly tried to hide when Mark looked down.

"Mark," Eleanor said, stepping forward and placing a heavy, leather-bound folder on his desk. "Before you say another word, before you let that viper poison your mind any further, I want you to read this. And I want you to listen to this."

Eleanor pressed play on her tablet.

The audio of Diana’s phone call from the previous night blasted through the executive office.

“...I have already called the local police station and filed a runaway report. I told them you stole money from my purse... As long as you two are around, Mark keeps a trust fund in your mother's name that I can't touch...”

The office went deathly quiet. Mark froze, his hands dropping from Diana’s shoulders. He stared at the tablet, his face draining of all color as he recognized his wife's voice—not the warm, chirpy voice she used with him, but the cold, vicious hiss of a monster.

"Mark, that's... that's a fake!" Diana stammered, her voice rising in panic as she backed away from him. "It's a digital manipulation! Eleanor hired someone to forge my voice! You know how much she hates me!"

"And this?" Eleanor asked, opening the folder to reveal high-resolution printouts of Lily’s journal entries, alongside a medical evaluation report stamped by the chief of pediatrics at the city’s top hospital. "This is the medical report from this morning, Mark. Your children are severely malnourished. They have signs of prolonged confinement. Noah has severe anxiety-induced respiratory trauma. They have been locked in their rooms and fed bread and water while you were away making millions."

Mark slowly turned his head to look at Diana. The illusion was shattering, the scales falling from his eyes in a brutal, agonizing rush of reality. He looked at his children—at Noah’s raw, bitten fingernails, at Lily’s defensive, protective stance in front of her brother.

"Dad," Noah whispered, a single tear rolling down his nose. "She locked us in. Every night. We were so hungry."

A guttural, broken sound escaped Mark’s throat. The realization of his own monumental failure, his absolute blindness, and the torture his children had endured under his own roof broke him completely. He didn't look at Diana. He fell to his knees in front of the twins, buried his face in his hands, and sobbed.

"Oh my God... what have I done?" Mark wept, his shoulders shaking violently. "My beautiful babies... I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry."
